Job Description POSITION OBJECTIVE

Working under moderate supervision, the Research Assistant 1 will perform research work in bio-medical and related technical areas involving the use of lab/research skills. This work will assist in developing and characterizing mouse models for pediatric diseases and will ultimately assist in understanding the biological basis for these pediatric diseases which could lead to new therapeutic strategies. This position will manage mouse colonies, perform standard molecular biology and tissue culture techniques, phenotypic characterization of mice and maintain a safe and effective laboratory environment through laboratory upkeep and compliance. This position will work with animals.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    Perform research work using standard techniques of molecular biology on tissues from mice (PCR, DNA analysis, qPCR, RNA analysis, Westerns). (30%)Perform phenotypic characterization of mouse strains which includes weight, length, life status as well as assays involving CFTR function (ussings, nasal potential difference). (20%)Culture primary cells from mouse and human tissue to study Cftr mRNA and function. Collect and record results from cell culture experiments. Maintain accurate records of experimental data. (20%).Maintain and manage a mouse colony that carries genetic mutations for pediatric diseases. This includes keeping accurate records of breeding, births and weaning. (10%)Maintain equipment utilized in experiments. Inventory laboratory supplies, order reagents, maintain chemical inventory compliance. (20%).

CONTACTS

Department: Daily contact with supervisor to discuss research.

University: Weekly contact with Animal Resource Center staff to share information regarding mice.

External: Weekly contact with vendors to exchange information.

Students: Weekly contact with student employees to assist them lab experiments.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

This position has no direct supervision of staff employees.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience: Bachelor’s degree in science and 0 to 1 year of experience or Associate's degree in an approved biotechnology program and 0 to 2 years of experience required.

REQUIRED SKILLS

    Knowledge and understanding of general genetics and animal breeding concepts.Ability to perform PCR and animal breeding.Must demonstrate compliance with Case Western Reserve University animal research and care (ARC) policies and procedures and compliance to regulations of the Animal Welfare Act, Public Health Service Policy, AAALAC guidelines and other applicable regulatory guidelines.Must demonstrate compassion for animals within Case Western Reserve University facilities and dedication to the Animal Resource Center’s mission. Must handle animals with care and respect at all times.Previous experience working with animals preferred. Must be able and willing to learn new techniques, procedures, processes and computer gear to protect the health of the animals.Effective oral and written communication skills necessary.Good interpersonal skills: ability to work and communicate with various individuals within the University. Good organization skills: ability to multi-task, prioritize and meet deadlines. Must demonstrate attention to detail and accuracy, time management and follow-through.Ability to work effectively independently and collaboratively within a team. Effective problem-solving skills; must demonstrate sound judgment and good decision-making. Ability to rely on and follow instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Ability to operate laboratory equipment like PCR machines.Proficiency in Microsoft Office (ex: Word and Excel), database applications and with internet navigation. Must demonstrate willingness to learn new techniques, procedures, processes and computer programs as needed.Ability to meet consistent attendance.Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors and customers face to face.

WORKING CONDITIONS

General laboratory environment. May have exposure to hazards. Mostly working with mice. May be required to lift up to 40 pounds at a time infrequently. May have repetitive motion with hands if doing genotyping.
