Job Description:


The School of Liberal Arts is looking for a dynamic, experienced, student-centered educator to teach Mathematical Problem Solving in Performing Arts and Entertainment during the spring semester. The College seeks Adjunct Faculty who focus on experiential learning and active engagement in their classrooms. Adjuncts chosen to teach at Dean College create a compelling and professional learning environment for students of diverse learning backgrounds. Adjuncts should be prepared to be flexible as both online and face-to-face teaching modalities are expected to be offered with potential requirement to switch from face-to-face to online, as needed in response to conditions.


We are seeking an adjunct instructor for MTH 125: Mathematical Problem Solving in Performing Arts and Entertainment. MTH 125 is a 3-credit class that meets for a total of 2.5 hours/week. The adjunct pay rate is $3,200.00/section. Adjunct faculty are expected to hold one office hour each week for each section they teach. The Mathematics program provides a course charter with course objectives as well as sample syllabi. All faculty will be expected to make active use of the learning management system (MyCourses) at least at a minimum level established by the College.


The course description is as follows: This course is designed for students in the performing art interested in using a problem-based learning model to build the foundation of skills they will need for their future careers. Throughout the course students will engage in practical problems around challenges that require the application of mathematical thinking and skills such as set design, the budgets or producing a show and determining how to set ticket prices. Ideas explored may include set theory (with Venn diagrams), units of measure, proportions, modeling techniques, using simple statistical analysis, development and interpretation of tables and graphs, and linear and exponential growth.


There are multiple sections of MTH 125 section available:


  • Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 2:30pm - 3:20pm
  • Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 3:35pm - 4:25pm
  • Tuesday and Thursday 9:30am - 10:45am


Requirements:


  • A Master's degree in mathematics or related discipline area is required. A PhD preferred;
  • College teaching experience preferred, particularly experience teaching first and second year undergraduates as well as online;
  • Having strong computer skills, the ability to access the Internet, the college's online resources and website and a willingness to be responsive to students via digital tools is a requirement;
  • Experience with or willingness to learn Moodle, our learning management system, and classroom media is necessary;
  • The successful candidate will possess expertise in learner-centered teaching; use of technologies and/or strategies to enhance pedagogy and the ability to work effectively with a culturally diverse student body with a variety of learning styles.
