The Department of Science and Mathematics, in the College of Arts and Sciences (COAS) at Texas A&M University-San Antonio (A&M-SA) invites application for a non-tenure track appointment at the rank of Instructional Assistant Professor beginning in Fall 2020. A regional comprehensive university, A&M-SA has approximately 6,700 students enrolled in undergraduate programs and select graduate programs. Previously an upper division-only institution it transformed rapidly into a comprehensive 4-year urban university with the first cohort of freshmen and sophomores admitted in Fall 2016. Part of the statewide Texas A&M University System, the University is a Hispanic Serving Institution and a women student majority institution.
The successful candidate will be broadly trained in anatomy and physiology, willing to work in a collaborative and fast-paced environment, and be familiar with the needs of a non-traditional, first-generation, culturally diverse student body. A&M-SA faculty and staff are working to implement data driven and proven practices in teaching and learning, including experiential learning, which lead to student persistence and college completion. Job Description Summary:
This is a non-tenure track position requiring teaching and service responsibilities. Candidates should be able to teach undergraduate-level courses in anatomy, physiology, histology/microscopy, and related courses. The teaching load is a 4/4. Excellence in teaching at all levels of the curriculum is expected, as are committee and other service work, including the advising of students with educational and career goals involving the health professions.
- Ph.D. in Biology or a related field
- A minimum of one-year of full-time teaching experience
- Three years of full-time teaching experience at the college level strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated experience with contemporary instructional technologies, distance learning platforms, and video conferencing tools
- Awareness and understanding of the needs of a non-traditional, first-generation, diverse student body
- Experience with high-impact educational practices such as writing intensive courses, service or experiential learning, and undergraduate research
- Teach four 3-hour courses ( or their equivalent) per semester (summer teaching assignments may be available, but are not guaranteed)
- Teaching assignment will include laboratory courses with experiential learning,
- Membership on the Health Professions Advisory Committee, including advising of students concerning health-professions educational and career goals,
- Other service and committee work at the program, department, college, university, community, and profession levels.
