Summary

The Director of Distance Education (DDE) is responsible for the development, implementation, and leadership of online modalities of academic programs and student support services at CUSV. Under the general supervision of the Chief Academic Officer, the DDE ensures CUSV’s fully online and hybrid educational programs offer excellent quality and robust online equivalents of all appropriate on-campus activities, classes, and student resources. Working in collaboration with Academic Department Directors, Faculty, the Director of Program Development, and Instructional Designers, the DDE leverages effective pedagogical strategies to positively impact students and help fulfill CUSV’s mission to prepare students for success in the creative-technology industries by providing an extraordinary, real-world education inspired by the entrepreneurial spirit of our Silicon Valley location.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Coordinate and implement distance education programs from inception to completion

• Conduct research to identify emerging trends that offer opportunities for new distance education programs

• Provide consultation for the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of distance education projects, programs, and initiatives

• Oversee individual distance education projects handled by Faculty and Instructional Support & Design personnel

• Develop and oversee implementation of student support services for online students including academic advising, student retention and success, accommodations, extra-curricular activities, and financial aid

• Develop and oversee training to faculty and staff in the adoption and use of instructional technologies and educational best practices to support teaching and learning

• Facilitate collaborative initiatives with academic and support units across campus that foster best practices in distance education

• Ensure compliance with all accreditation agency and Department of Education requirements

• Ensure compliance with licensing and copyright laws and regulations

• Assist in the development of marketing efforts for distance education programs

• Collaborate with CAO and CFO to develop and manage distance education budgetary needs

• Submit required reports to appropriate offices as requested

• Coordinate with CUSV Admissions to manage enrollment strategies for all distance education offerings

• Maintain currency in the profession through seminars and workshops

• Assist in coordinating regular meetings and agendas for distance education faculty and staff members

• Other duties as assigned  

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Required Education

Master's degree from a regionally accredited institution with a major in education, instructional technology, distance learning, information technology, computer science, or a related field

Preferred Education

A Ph.D. or Ed.D. from a regionally accredited institution with a major in education, instructional technology, distance learning, information technology, computer science, or a related field

Experience:

A minimum of five (5) years of experience that includes

• College-level, curriculum development and instructional design for distance education modalities

• College-level teaching

• Project management

• Team or departmental management experience preferred

• Experience in, and knowledge of, industries related to CUSV’s offered programs/degrees desired

Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of design content and instructional technologies for both fully online and hybrid Distance Education environments

• Knowledge of application testing and instructional design theories, practice, and methods

• Ability to lead instructional design teams in the development of course materials

• Ability to remain abreast of emerging instructional technologies

• Ability to respond to multiple competing demands

• Ability to review/revise the work of others • Ability to supervise a team of individuals

• Ability to develop and maintain relationships with others

• Excellent organizational, planning, communication, and interpersonal skills

• Demonstrated knowledge of post-secondary and adult learning theories and skill in the area of integrated software systems

• Demonstrated ability to think creatively and to lead and manage change in a positive and inclusive manner and work effectively with a diverse student and staff population

Working conditions

This job operates in a professional office environment with extensive in-person and online people interaction. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and office machines. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required.

Physical requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear and use a telephone. The employee frequently is required to sit for long periods; use hands and reach with hands and arms for such activities as keyboarding.
