Barton College is accepting applications for an Assistant Director of Campus Life for Student Programs and Diversity Education, a full-time staff position. 

The Assistant Director of Campus Life works under the supervision of the Assistant Dean for Campus Life and Residential Services and supervises the campus life student assistants. The Assistant Director of Campus Life serves a critical role in fostering a vibrant and engaging campus life experience for a diverse student body. This role will serve as the campus lead for all public facing and internal cultural events and programming.

*This is a 12 month live-in position with on-call responsibilities and late-night and weekend programming responsibilities.

Primary Responsibilities

Student Activities/Campus Programs (40%):

  • Responsible for all aspects of student activities/campus programming operations to include planning, budget development, procurement, marketing, logistics, and developing student learning outcomes and tools to effectively assess student activities and events
  • Provide leadership for the development of a robust, student-centric, calendar of campus activities (planned 12 months in advance). The calendar will include coordinated weekend and late-night programs with college departments, student organizers, and Late Night/Weekend student workers each week to engage on-campus residents and commuter
  • Advise the Campus Activities Board (CAB) in planning traditional and social programs to enhance the experience of students at the college. CAP sponsors, co-sponsors, or supports over 50 events a semester, including many traditional events on campus
  • Provide leadership for the annual Signature Programming Slate calendar, including such events as the annual concert in conjunction with Wilson Arts Council and Greek Show in conjunction with the Assistant Director of Campus Life for Fraternity and Sorority Life and Student Involvement
  • Lead the planning and delivery of traditional Student Life events sponsored by the Dean of Student Life and supported by the CAB
  • Provide support for President’s Office student life-related events, including Campus Coffees and Student Lottery Dinner
  • Oversee hiring, training, supervision, and timesheet approvals Campus Activity Board members and other Campus Life student workers as needed
  • Provide programming support for home football games and tailgating events, including Homecoming
  • Organize new student orientation and welcome week programming in conjunction with the Assistant Provost for Academic and Career Planning
  • Collaborate with Assistant Director Residential Services and Assistant Director of Campus Life for Fraternity/Sorority Life and Student Leadership on student programming
  • Assist Dean of Student Life and Assistant Dean for Campus Life and Residential Services with other Student Life initiatives

Diversity & Inclusion Events and Programs (30%):

  • Responsible for all aspects of diversity and inclusion focused campus operations to include planning, budget development, procurement, marketing, logistics, and developing student learning outcomes and tools to effectively assess student activities and events
  • Serve as the Advisor for the Minority Student Association
  • Lead a team of employees and students with the development and execution of Barton College’s anti-racism training
  • Provide oversight and management for the heritage month programs and events including Black History Month, Hispanic History Month, LGBTQ History Month, and others
  • Provide leadership development and educational opportunities for majority and minority students on campus through lectures, workshops, trainings, and one-on-one conversations
  • Support individual students around issues of diversity awareness and collaborate with divisional colleagues to insert diversity education and training into existing and new programs
  • Plan and manage the Diversity and Inclusion operating budget
  • Assist in the development of policies and procedures, newsletters, brochures, etc that can be used to celebrate diversity and inclusion at Barton College

Campus Cultural Events & Programs (20%):

  • Help achieve the Mission of Barton College with an emphasis on the cultural development of its students
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Provost for Academic and Career Planning on the design and assessment of campus cultural events and programs that fall under the Barton College Blueprint.
  • Serve as the champion for marketing, outreach, and coordination of campus cultural events and programs that fall under the Barton College Blueprint

Marketing and Public Relations (5%):

  • Create comprehensive monthly calendars with Barton faculty, staff, and students to showcase all events available to students on campus
  • Responsible for the supervision of student workers who will assist with the daily posting of Student Activities and cultural events on social media to highlight key events that are taking place each day
  • Utilize the Barton App to advertise events, collect attendance, and provide a timely assessment of student engagement in student activities programming

Other Departmental, Divisional, and College Initiatives (5%):

  • Provide support in all areas of Student Life as needed by the Assistant Dean for Campus Life and Residential Services to include but not limited to:
  • Supporting the coordination and delivery of holiday and break airport shuttle services
  • Assisting in the administration of the Department’s planning, goal-setting, budgeting, reporting, assessment, and program review initiatives
  • Assisting in the preparation of the Department’s publications
  • Representing the Department at Admissions Office open houses and other events
  • Reviewing policies and procedures and recommending revisions on a regular basis
  • Assisting in the maintenance of the Department web pages, updating information as needed
  • Assisting in the recruitment, onboarding, and training of employees
  • Assisting in ensuring compliance with all state and federal guidelines and regulations
  • Attending committee meetings as necessary and assisting with other campus-sponsored projects
  • Participating in College/Divisional activities pertinent to the well-being of students and the college community; serving on College committees, teams, and task forces
  • Establishing and maintaining regular rapport across campus divisions
  • Performing other related duties as required and assigned

Work Environment:

This job operates in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment, including computers, phones, and photocopiers. This position will also require attendance on-campus events and activities in the Student Center, classrooms, and other facilities, as well as some travel and out-of-office activities, such as taking students on retreats and to conferences. This position will require night and weekend responsibilities. This position is required to live on campus in a college provided, rent free, partially furnished apartment. One pet and domestic partners are welcome. A meal plan is also provided while the college’s dining services are open.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While this is partially a sedentary role in the office setting, the position will be attending several meetings and activities in other locations both on and off campus. This role will be assisting students, faculty, and staff in less physically-demanding aspects of event set-up and clean-up.

Desired Education, Skills, and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution required
  • Master’s in Higher Education or related field preferred
  • Demonstrated experience in student program development, implementation, and assessment required, with a minimum of one year full-time professional experience in student activities and/or diversity and inclusion programming preferred
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Social media and mobile application use highly desirable
  • Ability to serve as a role model to a diverse student population through high professional and ethical standards within the field of student affairs
  • Ability to foster working relationships with students, faculty, and staff
  • Ability to maintain flexibility and work well in a fast-paced environment, including the ability to work nights and weekends as necessary
  • Demonstrated leadership, organization, and management
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent interpersonal or team building skills
  • Valid Driver’s License required
