The University of Virginia seeks a dynamic, collaborative, and experienced fundraising professional to serve as Director of Development for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). This is a rare opportunity to create and lead a best-in-class fundraising program as it works towards highly ambitious goals as part of the University of Virginia’s $5 billion Honor the Future Campaign.
Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Development, the Director will be a strong partner with the Division for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and will be a gifted professional with an exceptional track record in major gift fundraising and building relationships and coalitions with internal and external constituents.
Lead fundraising efforts for DEI by dedicating a significant portion of time to fundraising from established donors while identifying new prospective donors.
Manage and grow a portfolio of current and prospective donors for UVA’s top DEI initiatives. This portfolio will include both individuals and foundations.
Work with the Division for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and the Vice President for Advancement in the creation and implementation of short-term and long-term fundraising goals and objectives for DEI and make a persuasive verbal and written case for supporting key programs and projects.
Develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising plan to include special events, communications, annual campaigns, and major gift strategies.
When permitted, travel nationally to identify, cultivate, and solicit prospects for DEI giving opportunities.
Collaborate with colleagues across Grounds whose work is related to DEI and represent DEI fundraising initiatives with frontline fundraisers to establish a team approach to fundraising.
Staff, advise and brief the Vice President for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Community Partnerships on all aspects of fundraising and donor engagement.
Participate in larger DEI-related activities in University Advancement and across Grounds, including working groups, retreats and meetings as needed to develop a clear understanding the University’s broader vision for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to support fundraising priorities.
Develop and maintain an astute awareness of best practices for engaging diverse constituents and communities and serve as an expert liaison on philanthropy in diverse cultures for the UVA community.
Bachelor's degree with at least eight years of relevant experience.
Ability to frequently travel domestically with occasional evening and weekend work.
A valid driver's license.
A passion for advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Prior experience in non-profit or higher education fundraising and staffing senior leaders and volunteers.
Demonstrated success in fundraising, sales or managing relationships with high net worth individuals.
Track record of demonstrating a high degree of initiative, flexibility and will have the skills to shape and be shaped by an evolving fundraising initiative.
Exceptional communication skills, a high degree of personal integrity and have the ability to keep the big picture in focus while attending to the small details.
Experience using data to evaluate and plan.
