Department/Division Introduction

The College is currently searching for a Temporary Full-Time Instructor of Environmental Studies within the College's STEM Division. Under the general supervision of the Associate Dean of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, the Instructor of Environmental Studies is responsible for teaching 15 credits per semester of day, evening, and weekend classes in Geology and Environmental Studies; helping to coordinate course and program assessment across the division; supporting the administration and logistics of the Environmental Studies programs; working with faculty to develop open education resources (OER); participating in division activities such as curriculum development and academic advisement; and contributing to the College community through committee work or other extracurricular activities. This is a temporary full-time position.

The successful candidate will demonstrate an understanding of the mission of an urban community college and be able to teach students from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds. Candidates must demonstrate knowledge of educational technology, outcomes assessment, and have strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Requirements:

A Master's degree in Environmental Sciences, Geology, or Sustainability and Environmental Studies, or Ecology, from an accredited institution of higher education, as well as a minimum of one-year teaching experience (preferably at the community college level). Experience in Distance Education is preferred.

Finalists will be required to submit official transcripts and/or a WES Evaluation and provide a teaching demonstration.

Major Position Responsibilities:

A. Classroom responsibilities

  • Teach 15 credits per semester of courses associated with the Environmental Studies program
  • Meet classes/laboratories on the day and times assigned.
  • Use a multitude of strategies to create a learning environment that fully embraces and promotes diversity and equity in the classroom.
  • Develop and implement instruction for each class/laboratory period which is consistent with the official course outline.
  • Develop and distribute the first week of class, a written syllabus for each course to communicate to student’s course objectives, grading criteria, and classroom policies.
  • Demonstrate respect for student rights as specified in the College policy and applicable laws.
  • Ensure course textbooks and instructional materials are made available to students in a timely manner.
  • Refer students to tutoring and related student services when appropriate.

B. Evaluation of Students

  • Evaluate student progress toward meeting course objectives; advise the students of course objectives, methods of evaluation, and the results of the evaluation.
  • Return assignments and examination results in a timely fashion.
  • Maintain a record of student attendance and grade roster for each assigned course section. Submit midterm and final grade rosters and attendance records to the division dean and the registrar on required dates
  • Submit required administrative paperwork, including grade report forms, in a timely and accurate manner.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Coordinate course and program assessment across the division.
  • Support the administration and logistics of the Environmental Studies program.
  • Integrate as appropriate: open education resources (OER), computer-assisted instruction, laboratories, word-processing, and library/learning resources into classroom instruction.
  • Continued scholarship, especially the scholarship of teaching and learning.
  • Abide by department regulations concerning the proper use, care, and security of equipment.
  • Advise Supervisor of unsafe conditions or potential hazards and recommend solutions.
  • Fulfill all obligations as established in the current Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Advise enrolled students on such matters as Learning skills, collateral or enrichment reading, or experience opportunities for further understanding of the courses or subject field, career alternative/opportunities related to the subject field.
  • Provide academic assistance and related services to students during office hours.
  • Participate in the development and review of the curriculum as needed.
  • Participate in the development of alternative teaching modalities.
  • Schedule, announce, and maintain office hours.
  • Participate in advisory committee meetings as required.
  • Participate in professional development activities.
  • Attend and participate in division meetings when assigned by the College or shared governance.
  • Participate in the process of shared governance by contributing to the academic community through committee work on the department division, college level, or participate in other significant non-classroom college or community activities.
