The “window of opportunity” strategy is simply understanding that students will visit the health center (because it is safe and not perceived as negative for any reason) for much more than physical health issues (i.e. spiritual, emotional, family, roommate, class concerns, etc).Warm, proactive and timely responses will be the key to connecting them with the support they need to get successful support from other helping areas on campus.OVERALL FUNCTION
The Registered Nurse reports to the Clinical Director, and is responsible for supporting the people, functions, vision, policies and operations of the Health Center; enabling excellent patient care; providing quality medical services and support for the Nurse Practitioner, being a part of a supportive team to deliver quality health care to students, faculty, staff, administrators and their dependents; enhance health services through creative approaches, and maintain compliance with all health industry standards and laws and protect the university from unnecessary risk.SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:Administrative Responsibilities
The RN roles in the health center will be directed by the Health Center Clinical Director.Roles will rotate to allow for cross training and support.All nurses will have the opportunity to work closely with the Nurse Practitioner to support his/her patient care and services, but all RN’s will also rotate as a triage nurse, front office nurse, and the nurse to work with labs.Depending on the type of day, any RN with open time will assist the areas that appear to be the most pressured.Depending on preferences expressed, the Health Center Clinical Director will assign select administrative tasks to the various RN’s.These tasks include keeping the Medication Room inventoried and supplied, meeting drug sales associates and receiving and logging samples, coordinating the travel abroad clinic information for students, faculty and staff and coordinating vaccines, coordinating an annual health fair for the campus community, coordinating the allergy and TB shots, and coordinating the pulling and storage of historical patient records.Support the Director as the HIPAA Representative to Health Center and support all aspects of the Center’s privacy protocols.Nursing ResponsibilitiesTake vital signs.Determine by guidelines whether an appointment with NP is needed.Give appropriate over-the-counter medication when appropriate and according to protocol.Refer patient to Student Support Services when counseling services are apparent.Perform minor procedures under supervision of NP (i.e.: removal of sutures after NP has seen patient); Obtain rapid strep, rapid influenza and mono tests.Perform venipuncture; process lab work as appropriate.Computer knowledge a must:must be able to enter patient info for patient appointments, processing of lab specimens.Communicate effectively with Clinical Director, patients, staff, other referral sources.Make appointments as necessary with other health care providers.Communicate with Marion General Hospital ER staff when patient is referred to ER.Check in patients for NP per protocol.Check out patients for NP per protocol.Coordinate care with outside agencies when appropriate.Communicate with parents when necessary and consent obtained.Attend staff meetings.Be flexible and able to fill in all other nurses’ area when needed. Instruct patients on use, side effects of medications.Supervise student nurses as requested.Stock supplies and clinical areas as needed.
Chart accurately.Provide vaporizers, crutches, bandages, splints, ice bags, etc. and keep record of loans.Provide patient education to cover a variety of areas such as use of medication, side effects.Provide written education when appropriate.Insure that solid communication is occurring with patients, the public, parents, staff, departments, etc.Provide appropriate and current educational information and brochures for patients.Follow up with seriously ill patients; make contact with resident directors,GENERAL EXPECTATIONS:
Participate in professional organizations that pertain to this position.Counsel with students and refer as necessary regarding spiritual, personal, emotional or academic problems.Maintain a professional image and manner consistent with Indiana Wesleyan University's mission and goals.Support the policies of the student handbook with integrity.Fulfill other duties as assigned by supervisor.QUALIFICATIONS:
A born-again Christian; Registered Nurse with Bachelor of Nursing Degree required with current Indiana State licensure; Current CPR certification required, ability to work without direct supervision; quality clinical skills demonstrated; computer skills, web experience a plus; gifted in supervising and motivating others; creative and innovative; discerning; talented planner, organizer, and communicator; in general accord with the principles and positions of the Wesleyan Church.COMPENSATION:
Competitive and commensurate with qualifications.This is an hourly paid, on call/as needed position (There are no set or minimum hours for this position).
