We seek applicants who are dedicated to serving The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s diverse student body as a Lecturer I (renewable annually based on favorable evaluations) in Sculpture/Tech of the School of Art beginning in the 2020-2021 academic year. We seek a collaborative and energetic artist and educator, who will work diligently to create a dynamic program of sculpture at the School of Art. The ideal candidate will initiate creative thinking and interdisciplinary practice while demonstrating the capability and understanding of traditional sculptural processes and advanced technologies.

We want to provide our students with the tools and training necessary for creating works of art while developing conceptual concerns, freedom to explore materials, and their expressive potential including formal considerations, process, form, and context as they relate to historical
and contemporary sculpture, critical theory, and practice.

The candidate must exhibit a mastery of traditional and contemporary sculpture methods that are inclusive of digital creation and output with a working knowledge of applicable software. The successful candidate will maintain safe working conditions specific to sculpture in an academic environment. Sculpture facilities include but are not limited to wood shop, metals shop, casting, foundry, and rapid prototyping

A strong interest is needed in teaching across the curriculum, as well as an ability to contribute to sculpture and 3D area curriculum development. The ideal candidate will be able to work with undergraduate and graduate students in an interdisciplinary studio art program. The ability to work
collegially and productively with others is an essential aspect of the position. The University is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the

and out of the classroom.

Department/College Background

The UTRGV School of Art is a bi-campus school which maintains facilities in both Edinburg and Brownsville. In Edinburg is a 73,000-square foot facility with the highest quality studios and labs in graphic design, sculpture, ceramics, painting, drawing, printmaking, digital photography and film photography with a wet lab. In Brownsville is a 20,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor space with very unique 20-foot-high ceilings in all of their studios for optimum student art production in painting, ceramics, sculpture photography (digital and film), printmaking, drawing, an iMac lab for computer imaging and graphics, and a 3000-square foot outdoor open area for experimental art.

Minimum Qualifications

MFA concentrating in sculpture from an accredited institution.

Discipline Specific Required Qualifications

—Master of Fine Arts degree with demonstrated professional achievement in the field of sculpture conferred by the time of appointment
—Teach three courses per semester
—Possess experience of teaching sculpture and other related courses beyond the T.A. level
—Demonstrated knowledge of contemporary art theory relevant to sculpture and contemporary studio practice
—Shared oversight and operation of the Sculpture area including but not limited to overseeing a safe working environment, curriculum development, departmental reviews, executing a budget, managing supplies and equipment, and supervising graduate assistants and work-study students
—Demonstrated desire to mentor students
—Demonstrated ability to foster an active and engaging learning environment
—Participation in graduate and undergraduate student mentoring and advising, including active participation in B.F.A. and M.F.A reviews as well M.F.A. thesis committees
—Area representation and recruitment
—Committee and other service at the school, department, college, and/or university level
—Maintain an active exhibition and research record at local, regional, and national levels

Preferred Qualifications

—Demonstrated evidence of maintaining recognized, applicable, industry safety standards for wood shop, metals shop and foundry facilities.
—Evidence of drawing and visualization capabilities with an understanding of prototyping and construction
—Evidence of 3D computer-modeling skills
—Experience in successful grant and fellowship writing

UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code
§51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
