Job Details
To oversee, direct, manage all research activities of the department in the field of distance education (teaching and learning). Assist the director in preparing, monitoring and meeting departmental goals and managing departmental operation. Supervise, plan, organize, implement and evaluate activities associated with quality and excellence in online/hybrid teaching and learning by identifying and acting upon opportunities for multi-disciplinary research collaborations.
Description of Duties•Supervises personnel and day-to-day departmental activities, including research activities of quality and excellence in distance and hybrid teaching and learning.
•Assists in the effective leadership of the department, including operations, planning and monitoring the achievement of departmental goals.
•Assists in the design and evaluation of departmental programs and initiatives.
•Identifies and communicates best practices in technology used for the classroom and web based instructions.
•Develops short and long-range plans, conceptual designs, budget requirements and documentation for assigned area.
•Supports research in the design and development of distance learning experiences and innovations across all UTRGV online and hybrid degree and certificate programs.
•Designs and implements a wide variety of education research activities, including planning data collection, developing both quantitative and qualitative data instruments, conducting analyses of both quantitative and qualitative data, and developing recommendations for strengthening online teaching and learning.
•Produces a variety of written works including literature reviews, research articles, evaluations of online learning tools and resources.
•Presents research reports findings at state and national conferences.
•Conducts focus group interviews and design surveys to collect input from students, professors and other educational stakeholders.
•Represents program/project in official functions. Presents findings at meetings, state and national conferences, and seminars related to the program’s mission and goal.
•Develops, cultivates, and maintains working relationships with internal/external departments/agencies and other organizations associated with and/or receiving grant funding.
•Participates in the preparation and administration of the program budget for assigned area; submits budget recommendations; monitors expenditures.
•Maintains records and develops reports concerning new or ongoing programs and program effectiveness; prepare statistical reports as required.
•Performs other duties as assigned.

Required EducationMaster’s degree from an accredited university with major coursework in leadership, educational technology or related field.
Preferred EducationPhD from an accredited college or university with major course work in leadership, educational technology or a related field.
Licenses/CertificationsNone.
Required ExperienceThree (3) years experience in distance education in higher education.
Preferred ExperienceExperience developing grant proposals and managing grant funds.
EquipmentUse of standard office equipment.
Working Conditions*Position is for Brownville.
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Office Environment; some travel and weekend work is required.

A New University with a Long History
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 in a historic move that brings together the resources and assets of UT Brownsville and UT Pan American and, for the first time, makes it possible for residents of the Rio Grande Valley to benefit from the Permanent University Fund—a public endowment contributing support to the University of Texas System and the Texas A&M University System.
Our new university will also be home to a School of Medicine and will transform Texas and the nation by becoming a leader in student success, teaching, research, and health care. UTRGV will enroll its first class in the fall of 2015, and the School of Medicine will open in 2016.
UT Brownsville and UT Pan American
The shared history of The University of Texas Pan American and The University of Texas at Brownsville goes back to 1927, when Edinburg College was founded. In 1973, Pan American opened a second campus in Brownsville, which later became an independent institution of The University of Texas System in 1991. Over the years, the missions and the identities of these great institutions have continually evolved to serve the communities of the Rio Grande Valley.
Now, the evolution and connection between these two institutions is coming full circle as UT Brownsville and UT Pan American are being established as a single, new university and medical school, with a single, new identity—The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
