$1,232 per credit hour of instruction.

GENERAL JOB SUMMARY:
Under minimal supervision, Kirkwood Community College is seeking an instructor to teach 16-week hybrid (partially face-to-face, partially online) courses this Spring 2021 from 1/25/2020 – 5/10/2020 at our Cedar Rapids campus. We are looking for instructors to teach the following courses at the times listed below:

Elements of Writing/Core Writing Co-Req MWF 9:05am-10:00am; T/Th 9:05am-10:00am
Composition I MWF 11:15am-12:10pm
Composition II MWF 12:20pm-1:15pm
Composition II: Technical Writing T/Th 8:00am-8:55am

The instructor must evaluate, record, and report student achievement and progress in assigned courses in accordance with department, division, and College policies and procedures. The instructor is responsible for teaching in a hybrid, partially face-to-face and partially online, delivery format. There is a possibility for the instructor to teach additional courses in subsequent semesters.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

Essential Duties/Responsibilities
Constant (67-100%)

  • Effectively organize and teach Basic Writing, Elements of Writing, or Composition I curriculum in accordance with established and/or developed syllabi.
  • Effectively teach in various delivery formats. In particular, effectively teach in hybrid (partially face-to-face on campus, partially online) format.
  • Maintain current course syllabi for all courses taught. File a current copy of the syllabus at the beginning of each term in accordance with department guidelines.
  • Effectively organize and prepare learning activities for assigned courses in accordance with established syllabi.
  • Evaluate, record, and share student performance and progress on a regular basis and provide students with timely feedback.
  • Make student referrals when deemed necessary to the other college personnel such as the dean, counselor, Financial Aid, etc., for more specialized information and assistance.

  • Possess the ability to organize and present various concepts to a wide range of students with varying backgrounds and abilities, and adjust teaching techniques accordingly.
  • Prepare for, attend, and facilitate all classes and finals as scheduled.
  • Establish and maintain good working relationships with students, colleagues, staff, administrators, and the general public.
  • Communicate in advance to staff, dean, and associate dean when class is cancelled, moved to another location (such as the library), or taught by someone other than you.
  • Send or submit your course syllabi to the office staff at the beginning of each semester.
  • Check rosters to ensure that students in your section are registered for your section.
  • Report attendance for financial aid purposes.
  • Respond to students and to their work in a civil and timely fashion.
  • Report midterm grades and final grades accurately and by the published deadlines.
  • Respond to staff questions about scheduling matters.
  • Respond to staff questions for book orders.
  • Respond to staff and administrative communications about individual students.
  • Respond with data for the department assessment projects.
  • Attend to your Kirkwood email each weekday.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES WITH/WITHOUT REASONABLE ACCOMMODATION:

Position involves working in a classroom setting. Occasional (10-33%) sitting, pushing, pulling and grasping. Frequent (34-66%) reaching and viewing a computer and other types of close visual work. Constant (67-100%) standing, walking, repetitive motion, talking and hearing.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A conferred Master’s degree by date of appointment with at least 18 credit hours in English.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS, LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS:
  • Familiarity or experience with teaching college writing at all levels.
  • Graduate coursework in Rhetoric, Composition, and the Instruction of Writing.
  • Experience teaching college composition at all levels.
  • Writing center or teaching experience at a community college.
  • Coursework in college pedagogy.
  • Demonstrated experience working with English Language Learners.
