Under the general supervision of the Program Coordinator, Student Engagement the Spirit Coordinator is responsible for the overall administration of the University spirit activities including but not limited to cheerleading, mascots and dance programs. This includes the supervision of practices, determining training techniques, working closely with assigned athletic trainers, recruitment and selection of team members and traveling squad, and establishing norms for participation in cheerleading and dance.

Essential Duties Summary

•Responsible for insuring that the goals and objectives of the cheer and dance teams are consistent with the overall mission of Texas Southern University.
Responsible for keeping abreast of current information on NCAA/SWAC rules and bylaws.
•Ensures that adherence to NCAA operating compliance rules are addressed and carefully monitored.
•Responsible for designing and implementing a program that is to promote sportsmanship, foster good character and citizenship, and teach and help student-athletes become academically successful, personally successful and socially responsible.
•Responsible for supervising the conduct of all student-athletes and student-managers on all authorized trips.
•Responsible for the design and implementation of a physical conditioning program.
•Assists the Office of Student Life in the planning of transportation, accommodations and meals in connection with road trips.
•Submits all “end of season” reports and summaries to the Program Coordinator, Student Engagement in a timely manner.
•Recruits student-athletes under the NCAA and SWAC guidelines.
•Takes responsibility for various fundraising projects, with permission of the Program Coordinator, Student Engagement.
•Submits evaluations of each player and staff member at the conclusion of each season.
•Other duties as assigned by the Program Coordinator, Student Engagement.
•Organizing university spirit activities (primarily game day involvement) during both fall and spring semesters.
•Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Bachelor’s degree, appropriate experience may be substituted for education on a year for year basis.

Required Licensing/Certification

Valid Texas Driver’s License.
AACCA certification-preferred.
Experience managing a mascot program-preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

Work Experience

Experience coaching cheerleading or dance at the collegiate level or an elite high school program. Hosted auditions, cheer camps, participated in competitions with other squads, etc..

Prefer successful College cheerleading or dance coaching experience, preferably at the collegiate level. Volunteer and/or professional experience working with cheerleading and dance programs can be substituted.

Working conditions involves some exposure to moderate risk of accident and require following basic safety precautions.
Physical demands include moderate physical activity that includes prolonged standing and/or walking, handling moderate weight objects and/or using or carrying equipment.
Work may require routine travel.
Some stooping, lifting or carrying objects light weight may be required.
Bending, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.
Use of video display terminal.
