Primary Function of Organizational Unit :

Job Duties :

The postdoctoral scholar is responsible for independent and collaborative development, implementation, and analysis of scientific research in the discipline of cardiovascular and computational biomedical engineering. Responsibilities include management of all aspects of data analysis, manuscript preparation, presentation of results to the scientific community, day-to-day activity of undergraduate and graduate research students in the lab, and teaching two engineering courses. The lab has several on-going projects including the following: 1) computational modeling of the pulmonary artery and fistula flow within the context of pulmonary hypertension; and 2) mechanical testing and computational modeling of lymphedema within the context of medical device design. Duties include: hypothesis development, literature review, collection of pilot data, report writing, and supervising of undergraduate research students and graduate research students, overseeing data collection procedures, supervising experimental procedures, review of data for quality control, supervision of data entry/data analysis, analysis of research hypothesis using descriptive and multivariate statistics, and the development of independent and collaborative presentations and publications. Scholars are expected to demonstrate compliance with established guidelines and regulatory standards for research including bio-safety, responsible conduct of research and human subjects training.

Approximately 70% of the postdoctoral scholar’s time will be devoted to research project objectives including computational modeling (fluid and structure) of blood flow, medical image processing, and/or mechanical testing and computational modeling of lymphedema.

Approximately 16% of the postdoctoral scholar’s time will be devoted to teaching courses within the engineering program.

Approximately 14% of the postdoctoral scholar’s time will be devoted to managing the day-to-day activity of undergraduate and graduate research students in the laboratory.

Minimum Education/Experience :

English Proficiency
Excellent written and oral communication skills
PhD in Biomedical Engineering (or other related engineering discipline)

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation :

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education :

We seek an individual dedicated to excellence in research; committed to training the next generation of engineers; and invested in social justice, equity, and inclusiveness.

Experience in the following research areas is preferred: 1) computational fluid dynamics; 2) fluid structure interaction; and 3) medical image processing. Experience in Magnetic Resonance Imaging protocol development is an additional benefit but not required. Alternatively, experience in computational and material modeling, along with mechanical testing, will be considered.

The following teaching experience is preferred, but not required: teaching undergraduate level courses such as introduction to Biomedical Engineering, Biomechanics, Fluid Mechanics, or Mechanics of Materials.
