Position Summary:

This is a responsible professional position managing and providing oversight of all laboratory animal husbandry and vivarium operations for multiple animal facilities utilizing multiple diverse species across campus to ensure appropriate housing and optimal animal care in support of research. Work involves ensuring compliance with regulatory bodies and implementing institutional policies and procedures.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies:

Thorough knowledge of the modern principles, methods, practices and techniques of laboratory animal science and research animal facilities operational management involving animal husbandry, supervision, purchasing, regulatory compliance, and physical plant operations.

Knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations pertaining to animal research, vivarium operations and other contemporary practices related to animal care and use.

Ability to make decisions in accordance with administrative rules, regulations and policies.

Skilled in the effective personnel management, training, and supervision of employees.

Skilled at preparing and maintaining complex reports and documents for various sources.

Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively in all forms.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with research clients, colleagues and personnel.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Plans, organizes, and manages animal care, husbandry, sanitation, and other animal research support activities while ensuring the safety, security and physical environment of the facilities, animals, and personnel. Directs and supervises laboratory animal facilities supervisors and maintenance personnel to ensure the provision of optimal animal care, regulatory compliance and cost effective and efficient operations. Performs supervisory personnel management duties; establishes and revises work methods & procedures, recruits and hires personnel, performs performance evaluations and monitors & evaluates work. Coordinates the preparation of personnel forms including appointments, resignations, accident reports, sick/annual leave and other departmental personnel records. Advises and disseminates relevant information to departmental personnel regarding UGA policies and procedures. Coordinates the procurement of operational supplies and equipment for all facilities including feed, chemicals, personal protective equipment, experimental animals, caging/housing monitoring equipment and other supplies/materials/equipment. Responsible for the procurement, transportation and sale of hoof stock used in animal resources research and instruction programs. Has signatory authority for approved petty check animal purchases and custodian of hoof stock sale monetary receipts.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Responsible for general and preventative maintenance of animal facilities, equipment and fleet vehicles. Responsible for resolving problems and ensuring functionality regarding equipment malfunctions, security systems, environmental monitoring systems, feed/water delivery systems, etc. Works with facilities management division and external service providers regarding maintenance/service issues and preventative maintenance and service contracts. Coordinates operational efficiency relating to facility and equipment usage relative to ongoing research project needs. Coordinates all major repair and renovation projects for building and equipment capital improvements in research animal facilities. Assists in the design, planning and implementation of all facilities improvement projects. Plans and coordinates the retrofitting or production of specialized primary containment, water/feed devices or other animal care equipment for research projects. Responsible for equipment storage facilities and the safe and efficient transport of equipment on and off campus.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Works closely with business management personnel developing per diems and service recovery charges including data compilation, time motion studies, and cost analysis following federal guidelines. Assist business management regarding expenditures, billing reviews, census/cost center issues, and other fiscal planning. Performs purchasing card administrative duties for subordinate employee cardholders. Identifies, develops, and implements cost containment practices relating to animal care operations. Facilitates order management and facility space issues. Assists facilities supervisors with animal operations data management program functions and issues or problems relating to animal orders, census, billing, space and equipment management, etc.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Coordinates security access system working closely with facilities management division, police and department business personnel to ensure systems are functioning appropriately and personnel access control is accurate. Manages key and camera security at multiple animal facilities. Responsible for ensuring animal facilities compliance with regulatory and institutional agencies. Develops and generates various metrics reports for internal use, federal and state regulatory agencies and institutional and accreditation entities. Works closely with department head to discuss operations management, husbandry, personnel, operations management issues or problems.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Assists in the development implementation of departmental policies and procedures. Trains and mentors employees. Develops standard operating procedures and policies. Supervises quality assurance programs for water quality, sterility and micro-biological and other testing for equipment, facilities and systems. Develops animal care and services budgets for researchers for grant proposals and other special projects budget formulations. Supervises the documentation and maintenance of essential facility records. Responsible for department equipment inventory; serves as custodian of department’s equipment including surpluses, transfers and identification of all equipment. Facilitates annual property control inventory. Performs other duties as assigned by the director.
