Position Summary:

The Nonhuman Primate Core (NHPC) Facility Manager is a senior level administrative position providing leadership and operational support for the planning and implementation of multi-disciplinary, complex research projects involving nonhuman primates (NHP). The Facility Manager is the point of contact for all users of the NHPC. In this role, the incumbent will oversee the care and management of NHPs housed in a research environment, develop and oversee standard operating procedures (SOP) and training programs, including those for safe work practices. The NHPC Facility Manager, in coordination with the Director of University Research Animal Resources (URAR), the NHPC Scientific Director, and the NHP Executive Committee, fulfills appropriate administrative, research, operations, and facility management responsibilities for the NHPC. The NHPC Facility Manager has oversight responsibilities to ensure the efficiency of performance of research projects and the overall operation of the NHPC in compliance with all safety, animal welfare, and regulatory obligations. The Facility Manager directly and indirectly supervises staff of the NHPC, holding responsibility for hiring, coaching/mentoring, evaluating performance, disciplining, and terminating, as appropriate. The NHP Facility Manager reports to the URAR Director and works collaboratively with the NHPC Scientific Director and other College of Veterinary Medicine (e.g., biocontainment manager), URAR, Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), and Office of Research staff in the oversight, planning, and execution of NHPC research projects.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies:

The NHPC Facility Manager should have comprehensive knowledge of training requirements for and professional skills needed by researchers and personnel in a NHP research environment. Substantial experience overseeing facility operations and managing personnel and teams. Excellent communication skills (oral and written), proven ability to collaborate with customers, and thorough knowledge of applicable animal research laws and regulations needed. Work experience at an AAALAC-accredited institution and AALAS certification are strongly encouraged.

Physical Demands:

1.Lift and carry up to 50 pounds with occasional lifting of up to 60 pounds. 2. Squat, kneel, reach overhead, walk stairs, and stand on ladders. 3. Work in an enclosed environment exposed to smells, dust, and dander of nonhuman primates. 4. Remember a large amount of details, know and apply UGA and regulatory agencies policies, draw appropriate conclusions from information available. 5. Communicate verbally and in writing to a variety of individuals including faculty, staff, auditing agencies, etc. 6. See well enough to perform a physical examination and hear well enough to ascult. 7. Perform duties wearing Tyvek jumpsuit, two pair gloves, and respiratory (either N95 or purified air pressure respirator). 8. Participation in the research occupational health and safety program which may include specific vaccinations before entering restricted facilities.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Management and supervision of NHPC facility to include:
• Provide leadership for overall animal care and facility management, upholding research quality in the NHPC.
• Manage, oversee, and supervise a team of high-performing individuals that provide NHP clinical and husbandry services.
• Work with the NHP veterinary technician, facility, and husbandry supervisors to ensure all staff are adequately trained and processes reviewed on a regular basis.
• Develop and contribute to training of researchers, new hires, and NHPC staff in collaboration with NHPC veterinarian, experienced research staff, and external expert consultants.
• Coordinate management of veterinary techs and husbandry staff.
• Organize approximately weekly meetings with NHPC vet techs, husbandry staff, NHPC Scientific Director, URAR Director, and the NHPC clinical veterinarian to discuss upcoming work load, research procedures, and animal care concerns. Prepare meeting minutes for review by NHPC supervisors/staff.
• Organize approximately weekly meetings with NHPC users, laboratory staff, NHPC Scientific Director, URAR Director, and NHPC clinical veterinarian to discuss active and proposed projects, provide procedure updates, and plan for future activities. Prepare minutes for review by participants.
• Ensure animal census is scanned regularly into the electronic Animal Operations system and plan appropriate staffing levels based on census trends and researcher proposed projects.
• Direct the development of calendars for research studies and procedures by collaborating with the NHPC Scientific Director, NHPC users, laboratory research coordinators, and NHPC veterinary and husbandry staff.
• Provide leadership and direction for housing and study room assignments and efficient, effective use of the facility.
• Maintain relationships with vendors, make recommendations for research equipment and caging options, including developing budget plans for purchasing those items, and work with facility supervisor on facility work orders.
• Coordinate animal procurements, and oversee monthly billing, routine purchases, human resource actions, and facility access.
• Liaise with research occupational health representatives to ensure occupational health entry requirements are met before independent facility access is granted.
• Participate in NHPC Executive Committee meetings by attending meetings, preparing agendas, providing project proposal request forms to the committee for consideration, and taking minutes.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Budgetary Management of NHPC duties include:
• Collaborate with URAR business operations to assist in annual (biannual) budgetary planning for the NHPC.
• Review approximately weekly the NHPC charge sheets for all user accounts.
• Work with URAR Operations Director and NHP Asst. Supervisor to coordinate maintenance and physical operations of the facility.
• Prepare forecasts of monthly NHP census based on planned research studies for review by Scientific Director and URAR Director; maintain a NHPC project tracker with information provided by researchers.
• Oversee updating of NHPC weekly census list.
• Communicate with URAR Business Manager monthly regarding research charges to be invoiced; assign charges (e.g., IDEXX, technician services, supplies) to research bills monthly.
• Request from URAR Business Manager blanket POs for regularly used vendors.
• Approve orders placed by other NHPC staff in UGAMart.
• Price equipment and supplies needed for the NHPC, researching value and costs.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Research Coordination with faculty using the NHPC facility to include:
• Serve as the point of contact for NHPC users.
• Inform facility users and personnel of current applicable policies and procedures regarding operations and services.
• Provide guidance related to NHPC procedures, depending on background and experience.
• Manage, plan, and coordinate procurement and delivery of NHPs with the NHPC veterinarian and in consultation with the NHPC Scientific Director.
• Work directly with NHPC users to schedule studies, assign vet techs to projects, schedule pre-implementation meetings, and oversee project launches.
• Collect and archive clinical and research data and report results to researchers. Discuss data collection and procedural questions with NHPC users.
• Prepare estimates of animal research costs for NHPC users.
• Work closely with other UGA entities to facilitate research procedures, such as the Animal Health Research Center and the Veterinary Medical Center.

Duties/Responsibilities:

NHPC Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) review and implementation to include:
• Manage and direct the writing, development, implementation, and maintenance of SOPs for animal care and use within the NHPC.
• Oversee implementation of SOPs, including maintenance on NHPC computer servers, review and updates of SOPs
• Work with the NHPC Scientific Director, URAR Veterinarians, and IACUC office to ensure all NHPC SOPs and animal care procedures are in compliance with appropriate regulatory entities.
• Initiate addition of SOPs to the UGA Professional Education Portal (PEP) with mandatory sign-offs by personnel and NHPC users required to perform the training.
