Department Summary

The Department of Child and Adolescent Development provides a well-rounded curriculum that incorporates theory, research, policy, and practice. The course of study includes: a command of various theories and milestones of human development; an appreciation of the influences of parents, peers, teachers, social institutions, and other socializing agents on all domains of development throughout childhood and adolescence; an appreciation of the importance of issues of equity including the special considerations relevant to cultural and ethnic diversity; an awareness of effects of different child-rearing practices or conditions on the fulfillment of developmental promise; an understanding of individual differences and how to accommodate them; and a sensitivity to the commonalities and diversities in people of all ages. Brief Description of Duties

Lecturers are expected to teach their courses; collaborate with course coordinators; assess course and program learning outcomes; maintain office hours in accordance with university policy; and allow peer-reviews of their teaching. Lecturers are encouraged to seek guidance from the Department Chair and the Center for Faculty Development for clarification of university policies and department practices with respect to grading, assessment, writing requirements, curriculum goals, accommodations, and academic integrity expectations.

Candidates must demonstrate awareness and experience understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, cultural background, ethnicity, primary language and academic preparation – through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.

All university faculty are expected to organize their classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS), the official LMS provided for the SJSU community. All classes at SJSU, whether online or not, must be anchored in the Canvas platform to ensure faculty-student connection in a common space as all students are directed to log in to Canvas for online access to their classes. You will have access to this system prior to the semester start date.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s or Doctorate degree in Child and Adolescent Development or a related field, by time of appointment;
  • Knowledge of the subject matter in the area assigned, as demonstrated through relevant professional or educational experience.
  • Commitment to excellence in teaching, delivering high-quality instruction, and engaging in appropriate assessments of student learning.
  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills; and
  • Applicants should demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching and other comparable experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Evidence of satisfactory achievement in previous academic work.
  • Experience or expertise in online pedagogy and instruction.

Conditional Appointment

Please be advised that an appointment is contingent upon budget and enrollment considerations and subject to order of assignment provisions in the collective bargaining agreement between California State University and California Faculty Association. These provisions state the “Order of Work,” or the order in which available courses must be assigned to faculty, starting with tenure line faculty and ending with new lecturer appointees.

Salary Range -To commensurate with experience.
