Job Summary

Under the general direction of the Associate Vice President for Health, Wellness and Student Services, the Executive Director of the Student Wellness Center has oversight responsibility for the overall operation of the Student Wellness Center (SWC) including the assessment of student health care needs, development of programs and policies, management of a complex budget, and the supervision of approximately 75 staff, including physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, technicians, ancillary health care professionals, managers, administrative support staff, and student assistants. The Student Wellness Center provides a full range of ambulatory health care services and is organized into these five major areas: Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), Clinical Services, Health and Wellness Education, Ancillaries and Administration. The Executive Director is responsible for these areas and for coordinating SWC goals, objectives, and actions with those of the Division of Student Affairs and other University units. Work may include late night, early morning, weekend commitments, and travel as situations dictate/require.

This is a position in the CSU - Management Personnel Plan (MPP), and serves at the pleasure of the President. This position will require adherence to University compliance training such as: Conflict of Interest and Ethics, AB 1825 Sexual Harassment Prevention, Information Security, and Injury and Illness Prevention Program. The person hired for this position may be required to complete an outside employment disclosure statement in accordance with Title V of the California Code of Regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develops and implements short- and long-term strategic plans for organizational sustainability, program goals, and operating procedures for SWC to provide visionary leadership and direction for the department, and to foster continued support of a healthy campus community and specifically student-centered health care.
  • Assures effective service delivery with maximum benefit to patients through integrative support of all SWC major areas: Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), Clinical Services, Health and Wellness Promotions, Ancillaries, and Administration.
  • Assumes a role in the educational mission of the University through the development of student educational opportunities in the medical and allied health fields through Peer Health Educators, internships, programming, and practical training.
  • Ensures appropriate evaluation procedures, employee development, and team development.
  • Directly supervises three managers (Director of CAPS, Nurse Manager, Medical Director) and one professional staff member (Senior Operations Officer). Oversees supervision of staff in three different collective bargaining units.
  • Meets with and effectively communicates with personnel, department leads, and managers to discuss SWC operations, plans and expectations and to ensure implementation of CSU Trustees' (and Chancellor's Office) policies and procedures and compliance with all state and federal regulations.
  • Partners with the leadership in Counseling and Psychological Services in the operation and maintenance of the Student Wellness Center and its key functional and technological infrastructure, including policies and procedures for building security, development and implementation of long-range plans for building maintenance and repair, and planning for growth in services that align with student enrollment.
  • Oversees and is responsible for the SWC annual operating budget of approximately $14 million.

  • Excellent interpersonal, supervision, customer service, and leadership skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles of management, organizational planning, and personnel utilization.
  • Thorough knowledge of and demonstrable success in developing collaborative teams, which work from shared values to achieve strategic priorities.
  • Thorough knowledge of or an ability to learn rules, regulations, policies, and standards related to student health center medical services.
  • General knowledge of County Medical Society, California Medical Association, and American Medical Association ethics and standards.
  • Working knowledge of college health center AAAHC accreditation standards.
  • Ability to develop and promote health programs and activities that foster student success with regard to the values and mission of the Student Health Center, the Division of Student Affairs, and the University.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions and to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with multiple abstract and concrete variables.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to analyze situations and take corrective actions.
  • A general knowledge of University organization, administration, and governance.
  • Ability to develop and promote health programs and activities that foster student success.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Business Administration, Public Administration or other related fields
  • A minimum of three years of responsible experience in healthcare administration or other closely related field
  • Experience with accreditation standards and processes
  • Experience in preventive health and health promotion
  • Experience working within a collective bargaining context

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctoral/PhD degree in health, higher education, psychology, or other related fields
  • 5-7 years of responsible experience in healthcare administration or other closely related field
  • Experience managing multi-disciplinary teams within an integrated model
  • Experience working within a collective bargaining environment

Compensation

Classification: Administrator III
Hiring Range: Commensurate with experience
