Research Coordinator I
Job Description:The research coordinator will be responsible for the coordination and successful implementation of all research projects managed by the UF Honey Bee Research and Extension Laboratory (HBREL). The individual will help develop, design, staff, and administer research projects for undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdocs in the laboratory. The individual will work with UF Environmental Health and Safety to ensure laboratory personnel compliance with UF safety regulations for all research projects. In addition, the individual will provide safety training to all personnel, including volunteers, working in the lab. The research coordinator will ensure all research equipment is maintained and calibrated appropriately and maintain the state vehicles assigned to the laboratory.
The research coordinator will train laboratory personnel in best management practices related to honey bee colony maintenance and research and oversee the proper implementation of standard research protocols. The individual will coordinate research project logistics, develop Standard Operating Procedures for each project, and ensure all project needs are met, including ordering materials and supplies, managing research sites, and project staffing.
Along with the lab PI, Lecturer, Extension Coordinator, and Applied Researcher, the Research Coordinator will be a member of the laboratory’s administrative team, providing budget input and having monetary responsibilities in the form of equipment/supply purchases. As a member of the administrative team, the research coordinator is expected to use his/her own judgement in matters of significance.

All duties relate directly to research project coordination.
Research Coordination:
The research coordinator is responsible for coordinating all research project logistics (students, faculty and postdocs), from project conception to manuscript submission. This includes, but is not limited to:
Assess project needs to ensure supplies and staffing are sufficient
Purchasing any supplies that are needed for all projects
Find secure apiary locations for off-site field research projects
Review project safety protocols
Develop Standard Operating Procedures for each project conducted by laboratory personnel
Laboratory Safety:
The research coordinator is responsible for working closely with UF’s Environmental Health and Safety division to ensure that laboratory personnel comply with all UF safety requirements. These responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Oversee all laboratory safety efforts
Coordinate laboratory safety inspections with UF Environmental Health and Safety
Maintain chemical inventory
Manage hazardous waste accumulation and disposal
Train new employees, students, and volunteers in appropriate lab safety and waste disposal practices
Keep training logs to ensure all individuals are up-to-date with required trainings
Administrative:
The laboratory manager is responsible for overseeing lab logistics. This includes, but is not limited to:
Coordinate research activities and findings by J1 scholars
Purchase materials, supplies, and equipment and submit purchase documents on-time [the individual will be required to obtain a University-issued purchasing card]
Coordinate facility and vehicle maintenance
Submit travel authorizations and expense reports
Monitor time submitted by all OPS employees
Coordinate the hiring of new employees and orientation for volunteers and visiting scholars
Submit work orders, maintain state vehicles, and report on space allocations
$37,000-$39,000 annually
Minimum Requirements:Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Must hold a valid FL driver’s license
Preferred Qualifications:Bachelor’s Degree or higher in a relevant field
Two years of working experience in a research laboratory
Proficiency with computers, including the Microsoft Office Suite
Experience working with honey bees (not required)
Laboratory Safety Coordination
Extension/Outreach experience
Knowledge of UF personnel and time card policies
Must not be allergic to stinging insects
Self-motivated, highly organized, strong attention to details
Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently and prioritize effectively
