Stanford University is seeking a 3D Healthcare Printing Specialist to work Under general supervision of the 3D Laboratory Operations Manager, the 3D Healthcare Printing Specialist operates and maintains 3D printing equipment, which run on a variety of software applications and operating systems. The Printing Specialist manipulates digital CT and MRI medical images in multiple planes and dimensions for clinical visualization, research projects, and quantitative analysis.

This role will primarily focus on all 3D Printing workflows; enhance design and deliver capabilities, research new technologies, and implement quality control measures. 3D healthcare printing in 3DQ Lab has focused on duplication and demonstration of patient anatomy and plans to expand into surgical cutting guides and eventually designing implants. The selected candidate will work closely with a clinical team to identify anatomy, isolate structures, design models, manufacture models, and apply quality standards to the entire process.

The 3D Healthcare Printing Specialist manages transfer of image data to and from the 3D lab workstations or other resources in an accurate and timely manner. Printing specialists uses the 3DQ Lab information system to update scheduling and billing records, and the radiology PACS system to view and network image data.

The candidate for the 3D Healthcare Printing Specialist position will undergo a rigorous training period for approximately three to six months. This will include training in operation of complex 3D imaging software, and in creating standard design templates for demonstration of a wide range of clinical anatomy and pathology.

Duties include:

  • Work closely with the physician on complex medical imaging procedures, 3D reformations, and post processing procedures.
  • Participate in the development, implementation, and execution of multiple research studies involving medical imaging systems; use product, research software and hardware, and/or computer systems to generate clinical images and data to assist in diagnoses and therapies.
  • Operate medical imaging systems to obtain images for use in the research of pathologies and development of clinical imaging procedures; operate computer systems to generate images for use in clinical diagnoses and therapies and in the development of research projects.
  • Transfer, position and instruct patients regarding procedures; instruct researchers, technologists, and physicians regarding procedures.
  • Provide technical, scientific, and educational consultation to researchers, technologists, and physicians.
  • Test new products involving medical imaging and/or 3D reformations and post-processing.
  • Post-process volumetric digital image data on 3D workstations; produce and track quantitative measurements; ensure the post-processed images are of maximal clinical value.
  • Accurately record all procedures performed and maintain necessary paperwork and/or database for scheduling and billing purposes.
  • Provide support by assisting with preparation of interesting cases for publication and development of standard operating procedures, quality assurance programs, and departmental safety policies and procedures.
  • Provide 3D Print designs specifically aimed at 3D prints of anatomic structures, surgical cutting guides, radiological phantoms, and other novel applications as discovered and necessary.

  • The best qualified candidates will have demonstrated multiple years of experience in healthcare 3D printing applications and have expanded into designing cutting guides and other 3D prints for use in the surgical setting.
  • Bachelor's/Master's in Biomedical Engineering (or equivalent) desired
  • Attention to detail, in the 3D model, verbal/written communication, tracking maintenance/quality, and the entire process/workflow for 3D printing/device design.
  • Efficient using various 3D Printing software which generate 3D-printable objects.
  • Mastery of 3D printing methods, materials, vendors and capabilities.
  • Advanced understanding of DICOM images, basic knowledge of CT and MRI physics, and image artifacts.
  • Demonstrated experience creating 3D models in a healthcare setting.
  • Demonstrated experience operating and maintaining 3D Printers, inventory management, waste management.
  • Rapid-prototyping experience.
  • Human anatomy and medical terminology exposure and experience.
  • Project Management experience.
  • Prior research experience and understanding of research methodologies.

  • Two-year degree and one year of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • High degree of judgment and skill.
  • Reliable self-starting and self-directed nature, exhibiting initiative and focused work ethic.
  • Basic knowledge in cross-sectional anatomy and physiology, sterile technique, patient relations, medical imaging examination preparation, and medical imaging safety and screening procedures.
  • Basic knowledge and skills in the operation of medical imaging systems, 3D reformations, and post-processing procedures.
  • Basic working knowledge of medical imaging physics, principles, tissue contrast, and applications.
  • Familiarity with Unix, Windows, Mac, and/or Linux computer operating systems; experience in MR system operation and troubleshooting system and computer issues.
  • Ability to identify images for post-processing and/or artifacts in the images; ability to respond to detailed requests for views and/or images depicting certain anatomy and/or pathology.
  • Experience in teaching and instruction of technologists, researchers, and/or physicians.
  • Ability to collaborate with other professional colleagues.

  • Must hold one of the following certifications: American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT), California Registry of Radiologic Technologists, American Registry of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologist (ARMRIT).
  • Advanced ARRT registry (e.g. CT, MR, etc.) desired.

  • No heart implants.
  • Requires good fitness/aerobic capacity and visual/auditory acuity including color vision.
  • Constantly sit, perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently grasp forcefully, operate foot and/or hand controls.
  • Occasionally use a telephone, lightly/fine manipulation, lift/carry/push/pull patients or equipment that weigh 11 to >40 pounds.
  • Rarely stand/walk, kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other), twist/bend/stoop/squat, write by hand, sort/file paperwork or parts, scrub/sweep/mop/chop/mix.

  • Occasionally operate power-based equipment such as a water-jet, vacuum, dental pick; to clean 3D printed parts.
  • Fine motor skills desired for cleaning support material from 3D prints.

  • Occasionally walk distance of up to ½ mile for delivering 3D printed parts.

    • 'Medical imaging' in this document includes but is not limited to X-Ray, Nuclear Medicine, CT, PET, and/or Magnetic Resonance. Individuals are exposed to these forms of imaging and associated high magnetic fields and noise at greater than80dB TWA on a regular basis.
    • May be exposed to allergens from animal models, patients and human scan subjects.

    • Regularly exposed to 3D print media such as resins, plastics, alcohol, and other cleaners
    • These print media will have odors
  • Waste generated by print media must be disposed of properly, precautions to be taken when handling waste.
