The Oak Ridge Institute at the University of Tennessee (ORI at UT) seeks a Director of Communications who will develop and implement an integrated and comprehensive communications plan to build brand awareness and recognition, convey understanding and inspire excitement about ORI at UT’s mission. This is a highly collaborative position that requires an ability to balance multiple tasks at one time, prioritize, work with diverse constituencies, and manage competing obligations in a complex, multi-faceted, fast-paced environment. The Director of Communications will report directly to the ORI at UT Director and sit on the ORI at UT Director’s Leadership Team and will collaborate with the ORI at UT Leadership Team; ORNL, UT Campus and System Communications Teams; and the University of Tennessee Research Foundation.
The Director of Communications will communicate through the development, preparation and dissemination of materials to internal and external constituencies including faculty, staff, students, ORNL staff scientists, external advisors, corporate and federal representatives with the primary goals of:
• Increasing awareness of ORI at UT;
• Developing ORI at UT branding and communication strategies;
• Sharing success stories related to ORI at UT; and
• Reporting to the public regarding stewardship of public funds.

Minimum Required Education and Experience:

•Bachelor's degree in Science, Communications, or similar field
•Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in the areas of communications, marketing, visual communications, strategy management and development of content management systems and social media content.

Minimum Required Skills and Abilities:
• Expert working knowledge of communication best practices
• Ability to take complex ideas and research and communicate them to diverse audiences who may have little scientific background
• Exemplary writing, editing, and copy-editing skills, knowledge of Associated Press style
• Independent judgment, strong organization and communication skills, and superior customer service focus across broad and diverse subject areas
• Excellent, demonstrable computer skills in word processing, spreadsheets, presentation, database programs, Internet searches, and web-based software
• Planning, problem-solving, analytical, organizational, and project management skills
• Demonstrated leadership skills and abilities
• Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion
• Ability to make decisions that have a significant impact on the management and operations of ORI at UT
• Ability to contribute to the overall strategy and direction of ORI at UT
• Ability to think strategically and work independently to achieve goals
• Ability to prioritize, multi-task, and meet deadlines
• Ability to influence and build work relationships among a diverse workforce at all levels

Preferred Qualifications:
• Master’s Degree in Science, Communications, or similar field
• Prior work experience in communications in higher education or national lab
• Experience in data management and analysis in regard to effectiveness of communication methods
• Proficiency in AP style
• Experience with WordPress
• Experience with InDesign and Photoshop
