The Center for Social Sector Leadership (CSSL) was launched in November 2006 at the Haas School of Business to prepare a new generation of cross-sector leaders (nonprofit, social enterprise, public, philanthropic, business) with the practical skills to tackle complex global challenges and achieve social impact. As part of the top-ranked Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley, CSSL builds upon Berkeley's signature and historic commitment to public service and social change. US News & World Report's rankings of business schools ranks Haas in the nonprofit specialty category regularly in the top #2-4, based on CSSL's reputation. CSSL cultivates world-class courses, faculty research, experiential learning, and key external partnerships focused on developing leaders and excellence in social impact. The Center is run by an Executive Director, whose role is critical to leading the future direction of the Center in the broader social impact field and to advancing the Center in connection with the university and the business school as the sole social sector leadership center on campus. The Executive Director works with the Center's Advisory Board and Faculty Director. Responsibilities
  • Directs and administers an independent social sector leadership program with complete responsibility for administrative and programmatic activities.
  • Assesses program's effectiveness, and recommends changes to program's content, policies and procedures accordingly.
    • Facilitates, directs, and manages, (delete bullet before co-curricular) programmatic activities and collaborations across the campus and with external parties.
    • Oversees initiatives that advance experiential education and student engagement (manage Berkeley Board Fellows, Impact Speaker Series, and Packard Fellows program).
    • Monitors and evaluates programs and initiatives; provides strategic direction and recommendations to Haas senior leadership and CSSL Faculty Director.
    • Coordinates and develops academic program components, and applied research.
  • Identifies and pursues business development and funding opportunities and revenue streams and participates in fundraising for initiatives focused broadly on social impact.
    • Develops a sustainable financial model for CSSL.
    • Develops and executes plans for financing program activities ensuring their ongoing financial sustainability.
    • Raises funds to sustain and grow CSSL so that it is self-supporting and develops a reserve fund and endowment.
    • Oversees funding development cycle for grants, gifts, and other external funds, from development of funding proposals to fiscal compliance, budget and project management, and all reporting requirements.
  • Manages financial and HR resources.
    • Plans, directs, and controls Center and initiative budgets and manages financial, HR, technical, and other supporting resources.
    • Assures that all programs are financially viable.
    • Supervises CSSL staff.
    • Participates in advanced program budgeting and accounting processes to support financial infrastructure of program.
  • Facilitates the efforts of various departments, managers, and outside constituencies to ensure interdisciplinary collaboration.
    • Develops and leads CSSL's Advisory Board.
    • Leads programs and partnerships and works with Faculty Director to drive research and courses.
    • Manages relationships with deans of other UC Berkeley schools, as CSSL provides courses and programs for their students and alumni.
    • Develops and maintains close contact with external partner organizations relevant to CSSL's work and student careers.
    • Liaisons with Haas alumni groups.
    • Represents CSSL's programs to internal and external stakeholders.
    • Maintains close communication with students and student clubs in the area of social sector and social impact and leads CSSL's Student Advisory Board.
    • Serves on Haas and/or campus committees, participates in short- and long-term planning efforts as needed.
  • Assists in developing research, participates in professional conferences, and leads communications and outreach efforts on behalf of CSSL.
    • Represents Haas and CSSL at professional conferences.
    • In coordination with the Faculty Director, develops and implements research programs that reflect Haas faculty and social sector field interests
  • Career development by embracing the Haas Defining Leadership Principle of being a “student always”.
    • Participates in classes and/or workshops to enhance expertise in job areas, gain knowledge, or develop professionally.
    • Works closely with staff to encourage their professional development, procuring necessary resources to execute their work.

Required Qualifications
  • Academic background and experience in the social sector, business, social impact, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of administrative, budgetary, human resources and financial principles and practices.
  • Advanced oral and written communication skills.
  • Skilled at thinking creatively and independently on concepts requiring advanced analytical skills.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills in working with diverse groups to achieve results.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of how to work collaboratively with internal and external peers and managers.
  • Demonstrated success in building partnerships and collaborations across sectors, and a strong network in the social sector or social impact field.
  • Demonstrated business development and fundraising experience.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset to drive innovation.

Education/Training:
  • Advanced degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Extensive knowledge of the social impact and social sector fields.
  • Experience and knowledge of leadership development.
  • Customer service skills to manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • People management and supervision skills and experience
  • Advanced negotiation skills and capability to influence and lead all levels of staff.
  • Experience in public speaking.

Salary & Benefits

This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience within the range of $160,000.00 - $184,400.00.

This is a two-year, full-time, 40-hours per week, Contract (temporary) appointment. This role is eligible for full UC Benefits, including, but not limited to vacation & sick leave accrual and participation in the UC Retirement Plan (UCRP).
