The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the Allen E. Paulson College of Engineering and Computing invites applications and nominations for the position of Assistant Professor of Power Systems. The home campus for this position will be the Statesboro campus.

Georgia Southern University was founded in 1906 as a school for teaching modern agricultural production techniques and homemaking skills to rural school children. Its Savannah campus was established in 1935 as Armstrong Junior College for local youth who could not afford to attend college away from home. The Liberty Center in Hinesville was established in 1998 to serve the military and their families at nearby Fort Stewart, the largest military base east of the Mississippi. All three locations came together in 2018 when Armstrong State University and Georgia Southern University consolidated. Within this setting, the mission of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering is the following.

  • Prepare individuals to be highly qualified for careers in electrical and computer engineering through application-based teaching that enables students to put theory into practice.

  • Contribute to the field of electrical and computer engineering through student and faculty research.
  • Provide relevant service to the constituencies of the Department and University.

    Position Description. Reporting to the Electrical and Computer Engineering department chair, the Assistant Professor position requires an ability to teach electrical engineering courses, conduct research in the area of expertise, as well as support the service mission of the department. The faculty member in this position is required to develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses (lecture and laboratory); engage in academic advising; assist in program assessment and execution of a continuous improvement plan; pursue scholarly work, including research in the field, grants, and publications; participate in service on various committees, and participate in professional activities and organizations. The successful candidate is expected to develop a strong research program in his/her field of specialization, which includes seeking external funding. Areas of particular interests in power systems are: (i) power system protection and control/relaying; (ii) power system planning and operation; (iii) high voltage systems; (iv) renewable energy and smart grids, (v) power system cybersecurity, (vi) power system state estimation; or any other closely related fields. The position is an academic (9/10 month), tenure-track appointment, and the salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

    Required Qualifications:
  • Earned doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering with a concentration in Power Systems, or a closely related field, by August 1, 2021
  • Earned master's and bachelor's degrees in Electrical Engineering, or closely-related fields.
  • Effective English communication (oral and written) skills
  • Ability to teach effectively both undergraduate and graduate courses including Power Systems, Electric Machines, and other electrical engineering courses
  • Willingness to engage with institutional student success initiatives
  • Commitment to engaging with best-practice initiatives in instruction and pedagogy, mentoring, and curriculum design and development
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States for the duration of employment without assistance from the institution.

    Preferred Qualifications:
  • Relevant industrial experience or post-doctoral research experience
  • Research experience in the areas mentioned above in Power Systems
  • Previous full-time teaching experience
  • Record of scholarship and participation in professional activities
  • Ability and willingness to work collaboratively with faculty from a variety of disciplines
  • Experience in working effectively with a diverse student population
  • Experience in teaching capstone courses
  • Experience with ABET accreditation, SACSCOC, and/or continuous quality improvement
