Department Summary

Moss Landing Marine Labs, a consortium of seven California State University Campuses (CSU) and administered by San José State University (SJSU), is located on Monterey Bay. The faculty emphasis is on integration of mentoring, teaching, and research; and the excellent facilities and staff contribute to make this a renowned program for a Master’s degree in marine science. Since its establishment in 1966, MLML and its leading scientists have contributed significantly to the advancement of the field of marine science, both in Monterey Bay and worldwide. The MLML Visiting Scientist position was established in 1984 by a resolution of the MLML Governing Board to enhance the opportunity for professors from the seven MLML consortium campuses (SJSU, CSU East Bay, CSU SF, CSU Sac, CSU Stanislaus, CSU Fresno, CSU Monterey Bay) to conduct research and collaborate with the MLML faculty and students during an academic year, in- residence appointment. The funding support for the position is provided equally by the consortium campuses.

Brief Description of Duties

Responsibilities include ability to teach effectively and perform research in the applicant’s area of expertise. Candidate will be expected to coordinate the weekly seminar series with assistance from the faculty and students. Candidate must address the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age,cultural background, ethnicity, primary language and academic preparation – through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement. Candidates should have proven record of peer-reviewed research publications.

All Faculty should be organizing their classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS), the official LMS provided for the SJSU community. All classes at SJSU, whether online or not, must be anchored in the Canvas platform to ensure faculty-student connection in a common space as all students are directed to log in to Canvas for online access to their classes. You will have access to this system prior to the semester start date.

Required Qualifications

A Ph.D. is required. Applicants should be scientists in good standing and have research interests(to be pursued independently or in cooperation with specific faculty member) that are of overall interest to the MLML faculty and student body. In lieu of research, the applicant may propose teaching courses generally not offered at MLML but that would be of value to the MLML student body.

Applicants should have awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching and other comparable experience. Applicants are encouraged to contact appropriate MLML faculty members to discuss possible participation at the Labs.

Conditional Appointment

Please be advised that an appointment is contingent upon budget and enrollment considerations and subject to order of assignment provisions in the collective bargaining agreement between California State University and California Faculty Association. These provisions state the “Order of Work,” or the order in which available courses must be assigned to faculty, starting with tenure line faculty and ending with new lecturer appointees.

Salary Range – To commensurate with experience.
