The Department of Civil & Mineral Engineering, University of Toronto invites applications for a Research Associate (Limited Term) position in the Mining, Water and Environment (MWE) group. The focus of the position will be within Professor Lesley Warren’s research portfolio related to environmental management, reclamation and closure of mining waste contexts. The new hire will play a key role in advancing the objectives of Professor Warren’s multidisciplinary, multi-university and industry partnered collaborative research projects.

The Research Associate will oversee two large multidisciplinary collaborative research projects involving multiple institutions focused on mining wastes management and reclamation. The Research Associate will be responsible for research project reporting to funding agencies, managing research project budgets, organizing research project meetings with team members and industry partners, communications of project activities and supporting research activities by team members.

Key Duties:

    Ensure research project goals are met according to budget and timeline;Coordinate and manage research project reporting to funding agencies;Manage research project budgets;
    Liaise with co-investigators and industry partners for research purposes;Assist and lead the preparation of research reports related to the research;Manage large research datasets that include confidential data;Organize research related events (symposia, workshops, meetings);Assist in the design and implementation of research related outreach activities.


Candidates require a PhD in environmental biogeochemistry, environmental engineering or relevant scientific field, or equivalent combination of education and experience. The candidate must have experience working in teams of researchers, and specifically assigning, and managing tasks in large interdisciplinary projects. The candidate must have excellent inter-personal and communication skills, and a demonstrated ability to work independently and in a group setting.
