Job Description Summary

Inspired by the Search and Rescue Dogs that responded following the attacks on 9/11, the Penn Vet Working Dog Center (PVWDC) opened on September 11, 2012 and serves as a national research and development center for detection dogs. As pioneers in the working dog field, our goal is to increase collaborative research and the application of the newest scientific findings and veterinary expertise to optimize the performance of lifesaving detection dogs.The Penn Vet Working Dog Center is located at 3401 Grays Ferry Avenue in Philadelphia.

The Volunteer and Outreach Coordinator at the Penn Vet Working Dog Center is responsible for managing, supporting and growing our essential Volunteer and Student Intern program. This position requires incredible relationship development skills and will spearhead relationships within the community and community organizations, Universities in the Tri-State area, and students from across the country who are interested in Working Dog Research and Training. This position is an integral member of our team and collaborates with all areas of the PVWDC to fill the needs of volunteer and intern support. The Volunteer and Outreach coordinator role requires excellent communication, management, and organizational skills.

Job Description

The Volunteer and Outreach Coordinator will:

  • Manage Internship Programs & Coops
  • Recruit, interview, schedule, & manage the application process and interns
  • Serve as point person for all internship inquiries & college advisors
  • Create relationships with college internship program directors and advisors
  • Provide direction, guidance, leadership and educational opportunities
  • Manage the Volunteer Program
  • Recruit, schedule, conduct tours and volunteer information sessions including volunteer groups
  • Develop procedures and materials for volunteer & intern programs
  • Implement procedures streamlining application process, recruiting and office efficiency, including tours and orientation
  • Build communication and engagement both internally and externally
  • Provide office management, reporting, general administration, record keeping
  • Schedule and manage weekly Lunch & Learn programs and manage field trips
  • Prepare for inspections

We are seeking a candidate who collaborates well within a team environment, enjoys meeting new people and engaging with volunteers and interns. The ideal candidate should also have effective problem-solving skills, be detail-oriented, have the flexibility to prioritize and manage multiple projects at the same time while maintaining goals and deadlines.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree and 5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. 7 years of experience is strongly preferred. Knowledge of the mission and goals of the Working Dog Center, basic Microsoft Office skills, excellent time management skills, excellent organizational skills, proficient oral and written communication skills, the ability to work in a fast paced office setting with distractions, and networking abilities are required. Advanced computer skills, curriculum development canine experience is preferred.
