Louise McMahon Ahearn Endowed Professor

Boston College School of Social Work (BCSSW) seeks to make a full professor appointment for the Louise McMahon Ahearn Endowed Professorship beginning July 1, 2021. As one of the nation’s top 10 schools of social work, the Boston College School of Social Work is dedicated to pursuing pioneering research, scholarship, and practice to tackle some of the most complex social problems at home and around the world. BCSSW prepares scholars and social work professionals to create transformative, evidence-based interventions to improve the most vulnerable lives, with a particular focus on training leaders to advance equity, justice, and inclusion in diverse communities across the globe.

We seek for the Louise McMahon Ahearn Endowed Professorship an accomplished full professor or associate professor whose research and scholarship has helped shape the contemporary understanding of the causes and consequences, throughout the life course, of the effects of race and inequality on children, youth, families, older adults, and communities. Competitive applicants will be knowledgeable about the impact of these factors and interventions on quality of life experiences, such as health disparities, trauma and mental health, interpersonal violence, education, or employment. Candidates must have experience in research and practice with Black communities. The ideal candidate for this Endowed Professorship will have an active portfolio of extramurally-funded research, demonstrated leadership in the field, as well as a willingness to work collaboratively and lead both within their discipline and across disciplines. The candidate will be an individual who can bring vision, leadership, and enthusiasm to the School of Social Work to mentor junior faculty and build an innovative program of education, research, and interventions to enable thriving, flourishing Black communities. Ahearn chair will have opportunities to pursue transdisciplinary collaborations with the Schiller Institute for Integrated Science and Society, contribute to the school’s curricular innovations to respond to the aspirations of our Black communities, and leverage centers in the school including the Center for Social Innovation in these efforts.

Qualifications

Candidates must possess an active portfolio of research and scholarship, including a demonstrated capacity for obtaining external funding, and teaching. Preference will be given to candidates who hold an MSW and PhD in Social Work or related disciplines such as sociology, political science, psychology, public health, anthropology, economics, and education. Underrepresented minority candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
