To provide support to Upward Bound students through the provision of individual and/or group tutorial services.

Tutor will work with Upward Bound High School students.Description of Duties and TasksEssential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Tutors students according to set priorities and academic goals.
  • Provides assistance to students on a one-on-one or group basis in the subject discipline and study skills.
  • Organizes supplemental learning materials.
  • Provides feedback on student progress.
  • Maintains up-to-date records of tutoring contacts and other records.
  • Assists with additional summer program duties as assigned, including clerical assistance, program organization, field trips, etc.
  • Additional Job Specific Duties

    Assist students in the development of study skills necessary for successful completion of courses. Maintain accurate and current documentation concerning student contact and progress. Refer students to upward Bound staff for information or assistance with issues such as academic (juggling family, work and school, stress and time management, self-esteem and independence, study skills), career exploration, and transfer assistance. Conduct tutoring sessions in designated areas for scheduled time periods. Provide assistance to staff members to research, implement, and maintain the tutoring component in order to improve the tutoring program. Other duties as reasonably assigned by Upward Bound Director and staff.
    • Content knowledge in at least one of the following areas: math, language arts, science, and other academic content areas

    Help students understand course material. Help students prepare and study for quizzes, exams, and projects. Help students identify learning styles and improve study skills. Provide early intervention through frequent (weekly) contact with students.

    Help build academic success strategies appropriate to the individual student. Maintain and report tutor contact log, timesheet and any other materials, to UB Academic Success CoachKnowledgeMust possess required knowledge and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

    Tutoring techniques, standards, and supplemental learning materials for individual and group tutoring. Processes and resources for organizing and leading study groups.SkillsMust possess required skills and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

    Maintaining an established work schedule. Maintaining confidentiality of work-related information and materials. Effectively using interpersonal and communications skills including tact, patience, and diplomacy. Effectively using organizational and planning skills with attention to detail and follow-through. Understanding and following instructions precisely. Providing quality tutorial services to groups and individuals and providing feedback regarding student performance and/or progress. Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with individuals from diverse backgrounds, including students, fellow tutors, and faculty. Maintaining a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner that promotes good relations with students, co-workers, and staff. Tutor students in general high school subjects (including small-group and individual tutoring)
    • Communicate regularly with students during tutoring, keeping them on-task

    Technology Skills

    Demonstrated proficiency using standard office software applications.
    Required Work Experience

  • One semester related work experience.
  • Preferred Work Experience

    At least one year of related experience in the discipline.Required Education

  • Degree or substantial undergraduate coursework in the discipline, and demonstrated competence in the subjects that will be tutored.
  • Preferred Education

    Associate degree. Undergraduate GPA of 2.75 or better.Other Preferred Qualifications

    "B" or better in the course. Two semesters of tutoring experience.Physical Requirements

    Work is performed in a learning lab environment on campus in an academic setting. Subject to standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, kneeling, pushing, and pulling. Occasional lifting of objects up to 20 pounds.Safety
