The Assistant Professor of Jazz Studies will teach courses related to his or her expertise from the following: Jazz Composition, Jazz Theory, Jazz History, Jazz Pedagogy, Improvisation, and Applied Jazz as well as coach jazz ensembles. Recruiting students for the jazz studies program and serving on instrumental juries and recital/audition committees is also required. Advising and supervising student activities such as outreach performances is expected. Other instructional responsibilities will be determined by candidate qualifications and departmental needs. The successful candidate will be expected to establish a record of performances, recordings, and publications at the regional, national and international levels in accordance with tenure and promotion guidelines at the University of South Carolina. Responsibilities may include serving as Coordinator of CSAM (Center for Southern African-American Music) depending on candidate qualifications.
CSAM is housed at the School of Music and was created to preserve for future generations, oral histories, music recordings and film footage of African-American Music in the South as well as to capture music as it exists today through field and audio/video recordings. The coordinator will work with the African American Studies Program, the College of Arts and Sciences and UofSC Libraries to expand and promote the CSAM collection.Required Education and Experience:
Doctorate or Master’s degree with commensurate experience in the field of Jazz Studies is required. Documented experience as a jazz educator and ensemble director at the college level and a record of significant professional experience as a jazz performer is preferred.Preferred Qualifications:
