The School of Education and Human Development at the University of Virginia seek applicants for a U.S Department of Education Institute of Education Sciences funded Post-doctoral Research Fellow. The goal of post-doctoral training program is to prepare early career scholars with the necessary knowledge and skills to conduct high-quality, scientifically valid special education research that is relevant and accessible to education stakeholders such as practitioners and policymakers in the area of Autism Spectrum Disorder. Specifically, the goal of this postdoctoral training program is to prepare researchers to engage in rigorous research related to the developmental needs to individuals with ASD and the factors that can enhance school achievement. This role has an anticipated start date of Fall 2021.


  • Incumbents will present research findings at professional conferences and in scholarly journals, as well as work on academic publishing with the Principal Investigator and other Research Associates and Faculty.
  • They will have the opportunity to attend research meetings and workshops within the University and externally as appropriate and participating in the research speaker series.
  • The scholar will also receive mentoring on ways to improve teaching and mentoring skills, the preparation of grant proposals, and responsible research practices. Incumbents may attend as time permits regularly scheduled research-related activities at the University of Virginia in the areas of research methods, autism, and special education.
  • The Post-doctoral Research Fellow oversees data collection, ensures data integrity in collection and entry into database.
  • This position will undertake data analysis and reporting for the research team, as well as summarize data analysis and reporting for the research team in drafting reports based on results of data analysis.
  • Incumbents work with the supervisor and the team to develop communication products that highlight lessons learn from the redesign efforts.
  • Additionally, this Fellow will work with the supervisor to improve research design skills and knowledge of research methodology, as well as assist the research team in designing and implementing an evaluation of leadership preparation programs engaged in a redesign project.
  • Incumbents will design a methodological strategy for gathering and analyzing baseline, develop strategy on how to implement methodology, and coordinate the implementation of data gathering methods.


  • An earned doctorate in Special Education or related field, with an interest in developing or further developing research strength in the area of autism, specific to implementing evidence-based practices in school settings.
  • Outstanding interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills are essential.
  • Physical Demands: This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.

Anticipated Salary: ~ $60K, commensurate with the candidate's experience and qualifications.
