About the UC Berkeley, Department of Chemistry - Sarpong Group:
The Sarpong Research Group focuses on the total synthesis of complex molecules with the aim of developing synthetic methods. The research entails developing novel strategies and methodologies in pursuit of constructing complex synthetic targets with intriguing biological activity. C-C bond cleaving and forming processes are leveraged to access new organic frameworks for application in total synthesis or drug development.

Position Description:
The Project Scientist will be required to contribute to the research of several of the main projects currently underway in the Sarpong Lab:
  1. Large-scale synthesis of an intermediate with the aim to establish an efficient and scalable route towards a compound which is known to be an antivirus agent.
  2. Divergent total synthesis of sesquiterpenoid natural products by means of late-stage C-H functionalization with the additional aim to showcase a good application of this to complex natural product synthesis.
  3. Unified total synthesis of cephalotaxus natural products. From the establishment of the efficient route to a common intermediate, further development to diversify to all of the natural products in this family to show the importance of elaborating strategy for natural product synthesis.
