Job Summary

Required: Currently Enrolled Clayton State University Undergraduate or Graduate Student

Preferred: Library/clerical/office support/administrative work experience

Fill out one application to be considered for all available library positions. While student assistants are cross-trained and may be called upon to help out in any area of the library, the majority of their work will be concentrated in one of the following library departments.

Public Services Responsibilities Summary:

  • Check out and scan in circulating library materials, including Reserves, GIL Express, Interlibrary Loan, group rooms materials, and equipment
  • Maintain the order of the Circulating, Juvenile, Periodical, Popular Reading, Legal, Reference, and Audio/Audio-Visual collections by shelving items and shelf reading materials
  • Answer phones and provide the basic information or direct the question to a Library faculty or staff member
  • Conduct hourly headcounts and record interactions with patrons for analytics
  • Shift books as needed or assigned
  • Ensure library is presentable at all times by cleaning the equipment, books, and surfaces
  • Conduct walk-throughs of the space to ensure patrons are adhering to library policies
  • Assist with the hardware and software, including the computers and computer software, circulating equipment, compact shelving, printers, copiers, scanners, and the microfilm reader
  • Provide guest-login passes
  • Assist in opening and/or closing the library
  • Assist with creating, organizing, and maintaining displays
  • Participate in projects intended to improve workflow productivity, accessibility, and availability of information
  • Perform other tasks as assigned

Collection Management Responsibilities Summary:

  • Making library materials shelf ready by affixing labels, applying protective covers for book jackets and paperback books, and applying property stamps, theft-deterrent devices, and card pockets
  • Ensuring that added volumes and new periodical issues are checked in, processed, and shelved in a timely manner
  • Performing specialized processing required by audio-visual materials and music scores
  • Preparing a list of any titles withdrawn, and packaging the items in preparation for transfer to State Surplus

Electronic Services Responsibilities Summary:

  • Run a broken link report in Springshare LibGuides and make corrections
  • Check for broken database and e-journal links and make corrections
  • Check the catalog for duplications in e-book orders
  • Perform data entry for the Institutional Repository project

Marketing Responsibilities Summary:

  • Create and edit graphics and text content optimized for social media platforms
  • Record and review social media analytics to assess success and recommend improvements
  • Develop and contribute to social media campaigns to promote library services and resources or to increase followership
  • Take videos and photos of events and projects to promote on social media

  • Ability to learn and understand the Library of Congress Classification System and the Dewey Decimal System
  • Ability to push and lift books up to 15 pounds
  • Ability to communicate verbally with and provide service to library users (in person, online, or on the telephone) in a courteous, efficient manner
  • Ability to use a step stool or ladder to reach books on the top shelf
  • Ability to learn to use an Integrated Library System
  • Ability to work unsupervised
