The MMT Observatory (MMTO) is seeking a Software Engineer to join the MMTO team to support the operation of a modern world-class optical and infrared astronomical observatory. The MMTO, a joint venture of The University of Arizona and the Smithsonian Institution, operates a 6.5-meter telescope located on the summit of Mt. Hopkins (elevation 8550 ft), approximately 40 miles south of Tucson, AZ. Additional details regarding the Observatory may be found at

We are looking for a dedicated, self-motivated individual to join the MMTO’s Software Group. The successful candidate will support a wide variety of system administration and software-related activities with the goal of maximizing the reliability and optimizing the performance of the Observatory.

The duty station for this position is located on the campus of the University of Arizona in Tucson. However, the successful applicant may be required to spend a few days per month at the telescope. Occasional weekend and/or night-time work, including troubleshooting, may also be required.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and administer MMTO Linux and Windows computers, databases, and networking infrastructure.
  • Facilitate the use of machine virtualization and application containerization.
  • Maintain and improve the existing MMTO software codebase including custom services and graphical user interfaces (GUIs).
  • Follow industry-standard practices in software engineering including version control and documentation.
  • Support the troubleshooting of telescope subsystems.
  • Provide technical assistance to the MMTO staff and other end-users.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to be proficient in one or more programming languages.
  • Strong adherence to software engineering principles and methodology in design, coding, testing,debugging, version control, and documentation.
  • Strong software troubleshooting skills.
  • Skill in developing and maintaining technical documentation.
  • Ability and willingness to communicate effectively in a collaborative team environment and to respond to user requests.
  • Eagerness to learn new skills in a dynamic work environment.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in computer science, astronomy, engineering OR a related field OR equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience.
  • At least three years of Linux and, to a lesser extent, Windows system administration or software engineering experience or in related field.
  • Ability and willingness to work at elevations of up to 8550 ft. in occasionally severe weather conditions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with an astronomical observatory.
  • Significant experience in administering Linux operating systems.
  • Experience administering common Linux services, including web servers, databases, DNS, LDAP, and NFS.
  • Experience with single-point failure avoidance, maintenance of backups and spares, high availability of servers, ease of maintenance, system robustness, and security.
  • Experience with machine virtualization and application containerization.
  • Experience with Python, PHP, C/C++, JavaScript/Node.js, Java, Ruby, Perl, or similar languages.
  • Experience with data reduction and analysis.
