Special Information

NAU Online is seeking a talented professional to manage and direct its expansion efforts of existing, and the development of new online and in-person academic programming. The best candidate for this position will be someone who: is a proactive problem solver, thrives as part of a team, is able to analyze and synthesize new information quickly, pays close attention to detail, and is a champion of change.

Reporting to the Associate Dean of Innovative Academic Programs, and in collaboration with the Vice Provost and Dean for NAU Online and Innovative Educational Initiatives, the Assistant Dean of NAU Online and Innovation works closely and collaboratively across academic affairs to manage online academic program initiatives. This work includes the coordination of new curriculum development, research and implementation of best practices in online education.

The Assistant Dean engages effectively at all levels of the organization; collaborates productively with peers, partners, senior leaders, faculty, staff, and others; and exercises sound judgment and uses influence appropriately to drive work projects to successful completion.

Special Information:

  • This position is located in Flagstaff, AZ
  • Weekend and evening hours may occasionally be required
  • This is a non-tenure track administrative faculty position, with 90-100% administrative duties. The faculty appointment is an academic year (9 month) appointment renewable depending on program growth and continued funding, and the administrative assignment is a 12-month appointment renewable annually.

Job Description
Strategizes and manages NAU Online projects and initiatives related to high-quality innovative programs and course offerings such as Personalized Learning and micro-credentials

  • Lead continued development of faculty, student, and program resources with regard to HQOLE (High Quality Online Education)
  • Serve on Steering Committee for Online Teaching and Learning
  • Facilitate implementation of pending Expectations for Teaching Online at NAU
  • Provide timely and transparent communications to unit, division and beyond to insure transparency and awareness of activities, project status, and upcoming opportunities
Promotes teaching excellence at NAU

  • Collaborate with teaching-oriented staff in other Vice Provost areas on initiatives that celebrate teaching excellence to inspire and motivate other faculty to foster student success through online teaching and learning experiences
  • Teach one online course each academic year to remain current in faculty teaching experiences
  • Research and disseminate best practices in the design and teaching of online, blended and in-person courses to support student success and reduce the achievement gap
  • Review research on effective teaching approaches by reading current publications and attending conferences and webinars
  • Work with faculty and/or department chairs to adopt online teaching strategies that result in high quality teaching and learning experiences for student success
  • Support the development of structures and programs to support ongoing quality online teaching, such as faculty mentoring programs, review and refresh cycles for online and innovative courses and programs, and other program-level processes to support online faculty and student success
Provides project management and oversite to the expansion of existing and development of new online and in-person academic programming, including:

  • Developing and maintaining project scope, plans, expectations, outcomes and timelines
  • Assisting with the identification and development of new academic programs
  • Strategize and help manage NAU Online projects and initiatives related to high-quality online, blended, and web-enhanced course design and facilitation, specifically, help develop and refine instructional design team processes and documentation

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Education, or related field; AND
  • experience teaching online; AND
  • experience with project management

Preferred Qualifications
  • Doctorate in education or related area
  • A record of commitment to student success through effective teaching and other student related activities.
  • The equivalent of two years (4 semesters) of college-level teaching or other relevant professional experience
  • The successful candidate will be committed to supporting and enhancing a culturally rich and diverse learning environment.
  • The successful candidate will have the ability to work effectively with people from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds.

Northern Arizona University has a student population of 31,073, including approximately 23,000 on its main campus in Flagstaff and the remainder at more than 20 locations statewide and online.

Background Information

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting.

In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus and NAU-Fort Defiance as these campuses have on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities.

This is an Administrative Faculty (ADF) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) or the Optional Retirement Program (ORP); sick leave accruals and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified family members. Administrative Faculty are hired on a contract basis, renewable according to terms of the Conditions of Faculty Service. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). Employees will have 31 days from date of hire to enroll in benefits, and their benefits will then be effective the first day of the pay period following their completed enrollment.

If a new employee chooses the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) retirement option, participation in the ASRS Plan (and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it) will begin on the first of the pay period following 183 days of employment. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP; an alternative to the ASRS plan) will begin to participate on the first day of employment. The long-term disability plan that accompanies the ORP will begin on the first day of the pay period following 90 days of employment.
