  • This vacancy announcement is to fill a vacancy and to establish an eligibility list.
  • Both recruits and lateral officers may apply. Preference may be given to a lateral applicant.

  • Testing is tentatively set for the next group on applicants in January 5, 2021. There final group will test for the eligibility list only the week of January 18, 2021.

  • In order to be considered for January 5th testing group and the March 8th academy, you must have your NAU application submitted and The Law Enforcement-Frontline National Test (NTN) completed by the end of the day on January 3rd.
  • In order to be considered for the final testing group (January 19th), you must have your application submitted by January 6th at midnight and have the NTN test completed by January 17th.

Furlough/Pay Reduction Program

Job Description
  • Patrols assigned areas on foot, bicycle, or by motorized vehicle to control traffic, prevent or deter crime and arrest violators; issues warnings or citations to drivers when violations of motor vehicle laws are observed; enforces Federal and State laws as well as University rules.
  • Investigates all types of crimes and accidents; performs follow-up duties on crimes/accidents as directed by supervisor; interviews suspects and witnesses; collects evidence and facts; files appropriate reports as directed by federal, state, or local legal requirements.
  • Prepares detailed written reports of crimes, accidents, and incidents.
  • Responds to emergency alarms and calls for service; makes decisions based on analysis of situation and facts.
  • Serve warrants, subpoenas or other court processes as necessary
  • Responds to public service calls such as delivering emergency messages, motorist assists, animal complaints, civil complaints, domestic disturbances.
  • Investigates reports of missing persons, identifies areas of potential crimes or unsafe conditions; reports conditions and takes corrective actions.
  • Works with the university residents/community and other outside public agencies to solve residential/university concerns.
  • Make oral presentations to citizen groups on crime prevention/public safety issues.
  • Train sworn and non-sworn personnel on departmental policies, procedures and activities.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Exposure to potentially hazardous, uncontrollable and life threatening situations.
  • Work is performed in all weather conditions.
  • Work may include sitting and or standing for extended periods of time.
  • Work requires walking, running, lifting, and climbing during efforts to catch or subdue hostile individuals.
  • Situations move quickly from low stress to high stress.

Minimum Qualifications
  • 21 years of age upon completion of academy, high school diploma or GED, U.S. citizen, meet AZPOST standards (www.azpost.state.az.us); OR
  • Possess officer in good standing certification with Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board; OR
  • Equivalent out-of-state certification; must obtain AZPOST certification within 60 days from date of hire; AND
  • Possession of a current Arizona Class D driver’s license upon employment.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Knowledge of law enforcement practices and procedures
  • Skill in analytical, objective observation of situations and quick decision making.
  • Maintain proficiency in law enforcement equipment.
  • Maintain ability to perform to physical requirements of the job.
  • Skill in managing situations firmly, courteously, tactfully, and impartially.
  • Skill in the accurate and complete recording of information.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both in verbal and written formats.
  • Skill in keyboarding and the operation of a personal compute

Background Information

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting.

If you are applying for a job that requires a CDL, you will be required to register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse and adhere to the clearinghouse requirements.

Additionally, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States.

Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus and NAU-Fort Defiance as these campuses have on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities.

Salary

The budgeted salary amount is from $51,000 to $59,039.

**The starting salary will be determined by the qualifications of the selected applicant balanced with departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information.


FLSA Status

This position is non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The incumbent is eligible for overtime pay or compensatory time according to University policy. Further, the employee must submit timesheets that accurately reflect all hours worked.

This is a Classified Staff (CLS) position.
