Position Summary:

The Pagano group at Rice University is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to conduct research in trapped-ion quantum simulation and computing. The researcher will be responsible for performing research on multiple interrelated projects and will assist in supervising students in the research. One project focuses on the construction, characterization and optimization of a linear Paul ion trap and of the UHV vacuum system around it. A second planned project is the development of optical system for global and individual addressing of trapped ions to study entanglement phase transitions. The researcher will be responsible for operation of optical and electronic measurement apparatus; collaborative experimental design and analysis of the resulting data; and collaborative writing of papers to publish the results.

Education Required:

Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate

Major/Discipline:

Physics or other related fields

Experience Required:

No experience required

Experience Preferred:

- Experience with Ultra-High-Vacuum (UHV) systems
- Experience with optical systems, including laser diodes, Digital Mirror Devices (DMD) and high-power lasers
- Experience in FPGA-based experimental control systems
- Experience working in teams, including demonstrated leadership qualities

Skills Required:

- Knowledge of atomic physics in general and in particular of laser-atom interaction
- Skill in electronics, including feedback loop systems and radiofrequency systems
- Skill with optical measurements
- Knowledge of modern research methods, data collection and analyses
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as oral presentation skills
- Excellent organization and time management skills

Skills Preferred:

Strong programming skills in Python

Physical Demands:

Must be able to perform work safely in a laboratory environment, including a cleanroom and standard (safe) handling of laboratory chemicals.

Working Conditions:

- The group and the laboratory are located at Rice University in Houston, TX (pandemic conditions permitting)
- Attendance at group meetings and travel to workshops and conferences is expected
