Assistant Professor of Teaching Position in Computer Science: Systems
The Department of Computer Science (CS) in the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences (ICS) at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) invites applications for a position as Assistant Professor of Teaching / Lecturer with Potential for Security of Employment beginning July 1, 2021. The Department is especially interested in those who can teach CS courses with an emphasis on computer system topics. An ideal candidate will be strongly positioned to teach project courses that emphasize the design of hardware/software systems suitable for emerging applications and Internet of Things. The candidate may need to work with industry leaders who sponsor students projects in CS targeting technological innovation and creativity, as well as strategies and tools to manage software project development. The candidate is also expected to teach traditional CS courses such as compilers, operating systems, database systems, embedded systems, network systems, computer architecture, and introductory courses in computer programming using Python and C/C++.
The Professor of Teaching / Lecturer with Security of Employment series requires, in addition to excellent teaching and service, that the candidate make outstanding and recognized contributions to the development of his or her specific discipline and/or of pedagogy. This position parallels the tenure-track faculty series. The search is inviting applicants at the Assistant (potential security of employment; analogous to pre-tenure) rank. This is a full-time faculty position designed for individuals who wish to focus their careers on teaching, professional activities, and University and public service. Professors of Teaching are members of the University of California Academic Senate and have all the usual benefits of Senate membership.
The Computer Science Department's curricula, faculty and research focus on an array of topics, including computer architecture, system software, networking and distributed computing, data and information systems, artificial intelligence, and computer graphics, while also exploring interdisciplinary topics such as biomedical informatics, data mining, security and privacy, and ubiquitous computing. At UCI, ICS brings together three unique departments (Computer Science, Informatics, and Statistics), thus strategically positioning itself to meet the technical and social challenges of computing and information systems in the coming decades. The U.S. News and World Report 2018 Best Global Universities ranking identifies UCI as a top 75 university in computer science and one of the top 30 universities for computer science in the United States. ICS is one of only five computing-focused schools among the Association of American Universities (AAU) members. Our 90+ faculty members include 2 NAE Members, 14 ACM Fellows, 9 IEEE Fellows, 9 AAAS Fellows and many other national award winners.
For eight consecutive years the University of California, Irvine has been named a top 10 “Coolest School” by Sierra magazine for our innovative sustainable practices. Irvine is one of the safest communities in the U.S. and offers a very pleasant year-round climate, numerous recreational and cultural opportunities, and one of the highest-ranked public-school systems in the nation.
Applicants should hold a Ph.D. or equivalent in Computer Science (or closely related field), plus a strong interest and proven record of excellence in teaching CS courses at the university level. Completed applications containing a cover letter, curriculum vita, all available teaching evaluations, statements on contributions to diversity and teaching philosophy and three letters of recommendation should be uploaded electronically as PDF files.
