The primary responsibility of the CNS Research Assistant (Open Source), working under the direction of experts at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies, is to conduct technically demanding research on global nuclear, missile, chemical or biological programs using one or more of the following skills (some of which can be developed through on-the-job training): photogrammetry, 3D modeling, satellite imagery processing (including using SAR data), and various performance modeling software. The RA will be based remotely. The RA should work well on teams and be largely self-motivated. The RA should also be comfortable presenting his/her work, and teaching some of the above open source analysis techniques and best practices to others once fully trained, and may be asked to conduct training of other students and CNS staff.
• Contribute to CNS work related to the analysis of WMD programs in Iran, North Korea, Russia, the United States, and other countries, as deemed by future grantors.
• Process and use satellite imagery, including multi-spectral and SAR data.
Undertake traditional research, writing and analysis using a wide variety of sources.
• As requested, train other students and/or CNS staff on open source tools best practices
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: The applicant should be proficient with at least 1 of the below and willing to train on others as needed:
• Physlets Tracker
• Photogrammetry techniques using Adobe Photoshop
• Experience with Blender 3D modeling software
• Experience working with satellite imagery and GIS software (to include SAR)
• At least 2 years undergraduate coursework related to this job (does not have to be nonproliferation relevant coursework, could be in the techniques used for this job such as imagery analysis or 3D modelling)
