20-Oct-2020 Close All Job SummaryThe Masters of the Environment (MENV) graduate program, within the University of Colorado Boulder’s Environmental Studies Program, seeks a full-time non-tenure-track faculty for the Sustainable Food Systems track.
The successful candidate will possess significant academic as well as professional experience in sustainable agriculture and food systems, with an emphasis on agroecology and equity-enhancing approaches to food production and distribution. The candidate will have a nuanced, systems-oriented understanding of the perils and potential associated with the ways that humans satisfy their needs for food, fiber, and other agricultural products. MENV is especially interested in candidates with expertise at one or more of the following intersections: (i) agriculture, climate, land and natural resource management; (ii) food systems, urban planning and resilience; (iii) the food-water-energy nexus; (iv) food production and environment/public health; or (v) food production, supply chains & circular economy. We are also especially interested in candidates who have academic or professional experience related to resilience, social change, diversity and inclusiveness.
Candidates with significant experience in professional activity and research or creative work, a record of teaching, and a passion for student mentoring are encouraged to apply. Strong interpersonal skills and self-directedness are a must for this team-based program with a startup mindset. MENV is an innovative, transdisciplinary graduate degree program that sits within CU Boulder’s Environmental Studies Program, and is distinct from thesis-based graduate programs in its focus on preparing students for professional environmental and sustainability careers in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors. The program is cohort-based, accelerated, and intensive, including both demanding coursework and a year-long group capstone project with an external partner organization. In addition to a core curriculum focused on leadership, systems thinking, and environmental science, students in the program must choose a subject-matter specialization track. These include environmental and natural resources policy, urban resilience and sustainability, renewable and sustainable energy, sustainability and the outdoor industry, and sustainable food systems.

ENVS offers both research-based and professional graduate programs.What Your Key Responsibilities Will BeThis position is comprised of a nine-month academic year non-tenure track appointment and a summer appointment. The position includes a mix of the following four primary responsibilities: 1. Teaching. The candidate will teach both in-person, as well as online professional graduate courses; 2. Serving as the faculty lead for Sustainable Food Systems Specialization. This will include overseeing the curriculum and SFS faculty (full-time and adjunct), as well as advising students.3. Serving as an MENV Capstone Advisor. The faculty member will advise MENV student teams in capstone projects (akin to externships).4. This position may also include: Engaging in research or creative work related to professional practice. This involves a) demonstrating a deep understanding of professional practices in sustainable food systems b) developing, facilitating relationships with, and serving as a resource to external organizations; c) demonstrating impact and innovation within professional practice; and d) engaging in research and thought leadership in food systems.What We Can OfferWe can offer a competitive salary in the range of $65,000 - $75,000 commensurate with experience.Benefits

  • A PhD, a master’s degree, or other terminal degree.
  • Academic and/or professional background with an emphasis on agriculture, food systems, food studies, or a related discipline.
  • Candidates must also have at least a year of experience in teaching or curriculum delivery in higher education or for a professional audience.
  • Candidates must have at least one year of professional experience related to one or more of the five intersections identified above.

What We Would Like You To Have
  • Two or more years of higher education teaching experience.
  • Three or more years of professional experience directly related to one or more of the five intersections identified above.
  • Evidence of engaging diverse communities and creating strong partnerships.
  • Experience in creating innovative learning experiences.
  • Demonstrated experience of teaching, developing curriculum for professional or higher education learning, extension, and/or facilitation and technical assistance.
  • A passion for student mentoring.
