Description:

The Benefits Specialist reports to the Sr. Associate Director, Benefits Administration. Key responsibilities include managing leave of absence(s) in accordance with FMLA regulations, University policy & collective bargaining agreements. Incumbent will serve as the primary liaison to the workers' compensation, disability insurance and NY State Paid Family Leave (PFL) carriers. The Benefits Specialist will have primary responsibility for administering the University’s tuition assistance programs. This is an onsite position; work for this role is performed on campus.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:

• Manages all aspects of leave of absence administration including short-term disability, long-term disability, PFL, FMLA, workers compensation, and leaves under the University’s collective bargaining agreements.

• Responsible for administering all aspects of the University’s tuition assistance programs, including tuition remission, tuition exchange and tuition scholarships.

• Communicates leave policies to employees and their managers and process all applicable paperwork and payroll related transactions.

• Acts as a liaison with insurance carriers and outside consultants regarding leave of absence claim status.

• Coordinates annual workers compensation claims review meetings.

• Maintains OSHA log and provides notification to the Department of Labor about OSHA-related incidences.

• Prepares quarterly disability and PFL invoices.

• Processes life insurance and accidental death and dismemberment claims, and coordinates claim payments with the insurance carrier.

• Prepares tuition budget reports for the Office of Financial Affairs.

• Performs other Benefits/HR projects as needed.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree required. Advanced degree desirable.

• At least 3 years prior experience working in Human Resources, preferably in the area of Benefits Administration and leave of absence management.

• Proven experience working within a fast-paced deadline driven environment.

• Strong organization skills with the ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.

• Excellent presentation, writing and analytical skills.

• Strong customer service skills.

• Immediate to advanced skill level in Word and Excel.

• Higher education experience preferred.
