The mission of Student Financial Aid is to provide the financial resources needed for enrollment by a socio-economically, ethnically and geographically diverse student body. Job Description

Essential Functions:

  • Serve as a member of the Student Financial Aid leadership team.

  • Supervise and direct the work of the financial aid counselors and assist the Director in general oversight, training, development, and management of staff.

  • Represent the Director in his/her absence or as requested by responding to questions from other offices, and representing the director at meetings. Develop and maintain a strong culture of teamwork and collaboration both across the Financial Aid office and with University colleagues.

  • Collaborate with colleagues in the Registrar’s Office, Student Financial Services, and others to meet students’ needs

  • Provide leadership and management support to the financial aid team.

  • Evaluate business processes, make recommendations, and provide new solutions to increase efficiencies for the office.

  • Coordinate, lead, and document staff training in need analysis, packaging, and changes in federal, state, and institutional regulations.

  • Supervise financial aid operations for students enrolled in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and the School of Divinity

  • Supervise financial aid operations for student athletes and serve as NCAA liaison to the Department of Athletics..

  • Serve as primary financial aid counselor for a section of the student population, as determined by the leadership team, to include need analysis, packaging, and counseling

  • Perform related duties and special projects as assigned

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree preferred

  • A demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team-based environment, manage conflicting priorities, and work under deadlines

  • Minimum of two (2) years of supervisory experience with knowledge of supervisory principles, practices, and techniques.

  • Excellent numeric reasoning ability

  • Knowledge of accounting concepts as well as competence in Excel (mastery of Excel preferred)

  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) and Google suite of software applications

  • Detail-oriented with organizational and problem-solving skills

  • Able to manage deadline oriented projects

  • Able to demonstrate critical thinking and interpersonal, oral and written communication skills

  • Able to practice effective cross-cultural communication skills both verbally and in writing

  • Willingness and ability to take initiative

  • Able to handle sensitive information in a confidential manner

  • Able to work well with all levels of employees, be flexible in nature, have sound judgment with an open and collaborative style that encourages teamwork and cooperation beyond the immediate team to the broader organization.

  • Thorough knowledge of financial aid technology in a higher education setting; experience with Ellucian Banner financial aid and PowerFAIDS strongly preferred.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree.

  • Five (5) or more years of progressively responsible experience in financial aid administration.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of financial aid administration requirements of federal, state and campus funds and in depth knowledge of federal financial aid regulations.

  • Extensive experience with computer software, word-processing, PowerPoint, Excel, and database programs.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with experience in making formal and informal presentations.

Accountabilities:

  • Responsible for own work.
  • Manages staff and/or student workers.
  • Budgetary responsibilities.

The Associate Director will perform most job duties in an office setting on the University campus in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. In an effort to de-densify campus, Student Financial Aid is currently operating on a rotating staff schedule working from home and on campus. This position will not offer a remote working option after campus operations return to normal operations.
