This position is located with the Epidemiology Research Team in the UNC School of Medicine’s Department of Radiology. The department’s mission is to: provide excellent and compassionate care to patients; educate medical students with basic imaging knowledge; train future academic and private practice radiologists; and engage in basic and clinical research.
In accordance with that mission, the Epidemiology Research Team is a Radiology research group that conducts clinical and population-based research on cancer risk factors, cancer screening, and health services topics related to radiologic imaging.
We are currently seeking a data manager/programmer to work with the Epidemiology Research Team on an NIH-funded study of the relationship between mammographic breast composition, hormones, and breast cancer.

Position Description

The purpose of this position is to serve as the data manager and programmer for an epidemiologic study of the relationship between breast composition, hormones, and breast cancer. In this role, the data manager/programmer will be expected to manage the acquisition, collation, storage, and documentation of study datasets, conduct data cleaning analyses, create new variables, and conduct statistical analyses under the direction of the study’s faculty investigators.

This position is with a small, independent research group within the Department of Radiology Epidemiology Research Team. The data manager/programmer will be expected to interact with multiple groups to receive/deliver study datasets, including a clinical research coordinator within the study team, data analysts from other UNC research groups, and data analysts from other institutions. Additionally, the data manager/programmer will be expected to clean and analyze novel data generated by this study as well as existing datasets. Accordingly, the data manager/programmer should be able to comprehensively clean and prepare data for integration into larger datasets in use for the study.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the field assigned and one year of related training or experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

This position requires knowledge of applied aspects of research data management, basic concepts in observational and clinical research design, statistical programming, and protection of human subjects’ data. Previous experience managing and analyzing data for health research and proficiency with statistical programming software (e.g., SAS, Stata, etc.) is essential.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred candidates will have two or more years of full-time experience as a data manager and/or statistical programmer in a professional setting, preferably in support of social science, epidemiologic, or clinical research. Preferred candidates will also have a graduate degree (preferred) or graduate level coursework in one or more of the following disciplines: data management, programming, informatics, statistics or epidemiology.

The ideal data manager/programmer will exhibit excellent communication skills, a passion for developing professional expertise, the ability to process complex information, and the ability to provide information to others in ways that are productive. Additionally, preferred candidates will demonstrate competent academic writing skills to support participation in abstract, manuscript, and grant preparation.

The successful candidate must have the desire and confidence to serve as the research team’s data leader: they must be able to work independently, have well-developed critical thinking skills, and be able to engage in data investigation and problem-solving with minimal oversight.
