Position Highlights:

The Academic Advisor I for UA College of Nursing Gilbert serves as frontline contact for undergraduate transfer, graduate, and pre-nursing students for developmental academic advising. This position will be a member of the UA College of Nursing Advising Team in Tucson and reside on the UA Gilbert campus and plays a vital role in maximizing undergraduate student transfer, retention and success. The Academic Advisor I builds formative relationships with students by interpreting information and providing clarification on procedures and academic requirements for the College of Nursing’s Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing – Integrative Health (BSN-IH) and the Master of Science - Master’s Entry to the Profession of Nursing (MEPN) Phoenix programs. Duties & Responsibilities:

The Academic Advisor I serves as a key advising resource and liaison for UA Gilbert and Phoenix, while also providing assistance in multiple student services roles, including admissions and student recruitment for BSN-IH and MEPN. Working under the direction of the Senior Academic Advisor, the Academic Advisor I guides prospective and current UA College of Nursing students on their progress toward meeting degree requirements and drives engagement to empower students to achieve their academic and career goals.

  • Demonstrates flexibility in helping to implement and improve student support processes and activities.
  • Is committed to student development through advising, student advocacy, and student engagement activities
  • Can effectively communicate with prospective students, current students, faculty and staff.
  • Is service-team- and quality improvement-oriented and willing to be cross-trained with other team members.
  • Demonstrates an ability to work with a diverse variety of people including social identities, academic histories, and personal interests in healthcare.
  • Assesses individual students' stage of development (academic and career) and promotes their growth by determining suitable developmental tasks.
  • Evaluates use of transfer credit and determines whether or not degree and admissions requirements have been met.
  • Supports students in establishing realistic and attainable academic and career goals.
  • Assists pre-licensure students in determining educational plans, choosing courses, and exploring majors, minors, and career options.
  • Identifies educational and career options appropriate for each student and assists student with evaluating each option, including possible outcomes and their implications.
  • Counsels students onoptions to satisfy degree requirements.
  • Monitors students' academic progress, determines satisfactory progress toward degree, and assists students in completion.
  • Identifies current and potential needs or problem areas (e.g., study skills, tutoring).
  • Advises students with academic difficulty on development of an academic action plan, and refers students to appropriate campus resources for assistance as needed.
  • Using University systems (UAccess, Trellis, etc.) the advisor will maintain student files, records and advisors notes.
  • Maintains knowledgeof regulations and policies that impact students' educational options.
  • Supports the recruitment & retention of pre-licensure students through multi-faceted support activities in addition to advising.
  • Works with community college advisors in an effort to facilitate the transfer of students.
  • Serves as a member of a cross-departmental location-based team to offer best-in-class distance student services and collaborates to support services and operations at the Gilbert location.
  • Provides evidence and data-based input on admission, advising, recruitment and retention activities, academic programs, and course offerings as a member of the advising team.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Up to 1 year of relevant work experience required.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through experience required. Bachelor's degree required.

Preferred Qualifications:

*Master’s degree in a higher education preferred. *1-2 years of experience in student support (advising, student engagement, admissions, etc.). *Experience in a health sciences higher education environment. *Bachelor's degree plus experience in student support (advising, student engagement, admissions, etc.). *Ability to interpret learning experience needs of students, including online learners. *Ability to use administrative systems and standardized software programs including Microsoft Office Suite. *Ability to learn new software and systems. *Strong written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking. *Ability to interact in a courteous and professional manner with diverse constituencies. *Focused attention to detail and a high standard of excellence. *Ability to exercise sound judgment and problem-solve in complex situations. *High levels of initiative, dependability, flexibility and motivation. *Ability to establish, maintain and sustain positive, professional working relationships internally and cross-functionally. *Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, service-oriented office environment. *Ability to multi-task during critical time periods.
