Position Description:
The Promise Institute for Human Rights at UCLA School of Law is a young, dynamic Institute seeking a Communications and Development Manager to significantly amplify the impact and reach of our work. The Promise Institute is the center of human rights education, research, and advocacy at UCLA, focusing on the intersection of human rights with migration, race and indigeneity, technology, the protection of the environment, and accountability for human rights violations, isses that resonate with our location in Los and Angeles and that are reshaping our world. We empower students with enriching teaching and experiential opportunities in human rights law, engage with diverse frameworks and disciplines to generate new thinking on human rights, and advocate for change in coalition with academics, practitioners and activists.

In this exciting role, the Communications and Development Manager will help to build the brand of the Institute, and develop and be responsible for implementing our outreach, communications and development strategy, using multiple platforms to tell a compelling story to raise awareness of our work. This role is an integral staff member at the Promise Institute, supervised by the executive director. An ideal candidate brings strategic vision, is highly professional, advances work autonomously and with initiative, has excellent communication and problem-solving skills, and can work effectively with people at all levels in the organization, from faculty to students. The Communications and Development Manager builds relationships with external organizations and partners, enjoys purpose-driven work and is knowledgeable about human rights and social justice as well as communications and fundraising. We welcome candidates with experience working with social movements and grassroots-based advocacy organizations.

The Communications and Development Manager will be the key source of strategic communications advice to the executive director. This position works with Promise Institute faculty and researchers to communicate research output in accessible ways, and with community partners to support advocacy initiatives. In coordination with law school communications staff, this role will create and manage communications for the Institute, including through daily social media across a variety of platforms, promoting the work of the Institute and associated faculty, marketing events, producing Institute newsletters, creating email and social media campaigns, and keeping our website updated. The Manager will work closely with the executive director to provide daily operational support, including some administrative support.

In coordination with the Promise Institute leadership team, law school external affairs staff and the UCLA central campus development team, the Communication and Development Manager will identify new funding opportunities to support the work of the Institute, through researching and building relationships with foundations, corporations, and individual donors. The incumbent will draft reports and applications for funding, will be responsible for maintaining records on prospective and current donor relationships, and will ensure that donors and potential donors are kept apprised of ongoing projects and achievements.
