The Office of Undergraduate Research and Scholarships (research.berkeley.edu) at Berkeley is charged with integrating undergraduates more fully into the vital research life of the university. The Office works to increase undergraduate and faculty collaboration in research, to support greater participation in research by faculty and students, to promote existing research activities and programs on campus, and to develop resources and funding necessary to expand undergraduate research opportunities, thus enhancing student learning and satisfaction.
The Office of Undergraduate Research and Scholarships (OURS) directly administers the Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program (URAP), the Haas Scholars Program, Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURF), UC in Washington Program (UCDC), the Judith Lee Stronach Baccalaureate Prize, and the student-led program Underrepresented Researchers of Color (UROC). It also houses two campus journals that publish undergraduate research: Berkeley Undergraduate Journal, for research in the humanities and social sciences, and Berkeley Scientific, for research in the sciences. In addition, the office supports students who are applying to nationally prestigious scholarships and maintains the Scholarship Connection website.
The Director works with the Dean of the Undergraduate Division, the division's Chief Administrative Officer and senior staff, and other senior campus administrators and faculty to identify campus priorities and set a course for the development of undergraduate research opportunities and campus participation in national, externally funded scholarship competitions. Develops policy, infrastructure, campus partnerships, and programs to promote and support undergraduate involvement in research across the disciplines. Manages budget, hires and supervises staff for all programs. Directs development of resources, such as group workshops, central campus website, informational events, and electronic documents, to assist undergraduates in finding apprenticeships, or developing independent research projects. Creates unified showcase of UCB opportunities (for the public and current and prospective students) via web, print media and events. Works with College of L&S relations staff and donors to expand funding for undergraduate researchers; administers funding. Counsels individual students on research opportunities, framing research questions, designing and troubleshooting research projects. Recruits faculty mentors and selection committee/advisory board members. Guides and provides fiscal support to two student-edited undergraduate research journals. Prestigious Scholarships/ Scholarship Connection Office: Develops policy and infrastructure to support campus participation in national, externally funded scholarships, such as the Rhodes, Marshall, Truman, etc. Oversees maintenance and development of central campus database of external scholarship opportunities.
Directly Manages SURF:
- Directly manages the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF), a program that annually provides approximately 125 students with funding and intellectual support to devote the summer to research projects. SURF is made up of multiple “sub-programs” that slightly vary according to student eligibility, requirements, and funding. These include: SURF L&S (for L&S rising seniors completing an undergraduate research thesis); SURF Rose Hills for select STEM majors who have permanent residence status in Southern California; SURF-SMART for students who will apprentice with graduate student's working on dissertation research, and the Math Team fellowship. As manager of the program, the Director: hires and supervises 3-4 graduate-student SURF mentors; coordinates student application process, selection process, summer conference, collects evaluations/progress reports/donor letters from students; oversees distribution of student fellowships; and counsels individual students on research opportunities, framing research questions, designing and troubleshooting research projects.
Program Oversight and Personnel Management:
- Prestigious Scholarships/ Scholarship Connection Office: Develops policy and infrastructure to support campus participation in national, externally funded scholarships, such as the Rhodes, Marshall, Truman, etc.
- Directs and oversees the staff for the URAP program: develops policy and infrastructure and is consulted on difficult policy interpretation issues for the largest undergraduate research program on the UC Berkeley campus, serving over 300 faculty members and over 1500 students each semester.
- Directs and oversees the staff for the UCDC program, which sends 30 students/semester to Washington DC to participate in internships and in-depth research projects.
- Directs and oversees the staff for the Haas Scholars Program
- Directs and oversees the staff for the Judith Lee Stronach Baccalaureate Program
- Directs and oversees the undergraduate and graduate student staff who run the Underrepresented Researchers of Color (UROC) program - assisting them with budget oversight, grant writing and reporting, programming, and development of strategic campus partnerships.
- Coordinates the Undergraduate Research Peer Advising Program: each semester 8-12 upper division students volunteer to serve as peer advisors for the office - supporting the outreach, recruiting, and advising efforts of the Office.
Budget and Planning:
- In collaboration with divisional finance staff, develops and implements budgets for managed functions, including annual budget proposal for all of OURS.
- Manages budget, purchasing, and disbursement of $1 million in student awards and faculty grants and ensures all staff has access to the systems they need to do their work.
- Ensures all office operations comply with latest campus tech requirements (order software and hardware upgrades and new equipment when needed, transition to new technologies when needed).
Policy, Infrastructure, and Oversight:
- Develops, interprets, and administers a diverse and complex set of undergraduate research programs, and the external scholarships office.
- Ensures that students benefit fully from attending a Research I university, by providing them with mentored research opportunities:
- Develops policy, infrastructure and programs to promote and support undergraduate involvement in research across the disciplines.
- Oversees campus-wide programs including 300+ faculty research mentors in the large campus-wide Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program (URAP), URAP Summer Stipend Program, Haas Scholars, the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF), the Stronach Baccalaureate Prize, UCDC, and the undergraduate research journals BUJ and BSJ.
- Works with College and University Relations and donors to expand funding for undergraduate researchers:
- Identifies campus needs and works with Deans, L&S college relations/university relations, and donors to develop new programs.
- Administers funding and identifies campus needs and works with Deans and donors to develop new programs.
- Advises college and campus senior management on policies, practices, and procedures for increasing and improving undergraduate participation in the campus research community; among issues for action: human subjects research, risk assessment for researchers, diversity and inclusion.
- Works with faculty selection committees:
- Provides guidance to faculty, staff, and graduate students serving on the selection committees for the Haas Scholars, SURF, and Stronach Baccalaureate Prize: develops selection criteria, program policies and procedures, and determines when exceptions to policy may be warranted.
Undergraduate Research Resources:
- Oversees the development of resources to aid undergraduate researchers and their faculty mentors including: advising, workshops, guidelines and handbooks, and informational events.
- Coordinates undergraduate research opportunities campus wide so that any student interested in pursuing research knows exactly where to find information and resources.
- Oversees the development of resources, such as group workshops, central campus website, informational events, and electronic documents, to assist undergraduates in finding apprenticeships or developing independent research projects and creates a unified showcase of UCB opportunities (for current and prospective students and the public) via web, print media and events.
- Oversees the development of centralized publicity for a campus with diverse and decentralized undergraduate research programs and provides advice to staff and academic professionals working in undergraduate research across the campus.
- Advanced knowledge of advising and counseling techniques. Strong computer skills, proficiency in Google Suite, MS Word, Excel, and database management. Ability to learn, understand and interpret University policies, procedures and rules to diverse populations. Skills in monitoring/assessing people, processes or services, to make improvements. Skills in project management and social perceptiveness. Abilities in problem identification, reasoning, ability to develop original ideas to solve problems, persuasion and leadership. Excellent active-listening and customer service skills, demonstrated ability to apply tact and diplomacy. Must be able to work independently and collaborative on a team. Must be results oriented and demonstrate creative problem solving ability. Ability to multi-task and exceptional organizational skills. Maintain strong verbal and written communication.
- Advanced professional knowledge of undergraduate advising techniques in an academic environment. Advanced knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences. Knowledge of or ability to quickly learn common University specific computer application programs. Understanding of research objectives across different disciplines. Extensive experience managing multiple research projects. Advanced degree and/or equivalent experience/training managing research projects.
Salary & Benefits
This is an exempt, monthly paid position with a full-time salary. Annual salary is commensurate with experience.
