General Description:

Under the general direction of the Counseling Center Director, this position carries a full clinical case load, provides direct clinical services to individuals and groups, including assessment and psychotherapy, emergency care and consulting services. This position meets regularly with professional colleagues to assess, diagnose, and plan treatment and disposition of cases. The person holding this position is a full-time employee of the Division of Student Affairs and is subject to the conditions of employment common to all staff members of the Division. All offices of the various divisional departments are regularly open for University related business weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with the exception of those national holidays or special occasions specified by the University’s Board of Trustees. The Counseling Center is open until 7PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the Fall and Spring semester. The licensed therapist is expected to perform their duties conscientiously and responsibly; to adhere to high personal standards of behavior with students, colleagues, members of the University community and clients of the University; and in a manner consistent with the ethics of their own profession. This position will be part of the Counseling Center’s shared team approach to crisis and triage services. With a majority of their time serving as the primary contact for students entering the Counseling Center through the walk-in/crisis system. This includes seeing all students who present to UMCC either for the first time to initiate services or in crisis. In addition, this position will coordinate and collaborate with the Clinical Care Coordinator around managing post hospitalization/re-entry appointments for students being discharged, and any other clinical crisis situations that present to the clinic. This person is expected to keep themselves informed of current research and professional developments in their professional field.

Crisis/Triage Therapist Responsibilities:

  • Provide primary daily coverage to UMCC Walk-In/Triage services. The Walk-In/Triage is the first point of contact for many students seeking mental health services.
  • Liaison with case managers from Dean of Students Office and Housing around students in crisis.
  • Provide updates to clinical team during clinical case conference meetings around students they evaluated who were in crisis and/or used the triage services system.
  • Attend staff meetings with knowledge that they may be called out to attend to students in distress. Exception being during clinical case conference in which they will serve in a secondary role.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with Clinical Care Coordinator with providing training and onboarding experiences for new staff and trainees around hospitalization procedures.
  • At the direction of the Associate Director for Clinical services, coordinate and create triage scheduling system for the Counseling Center.
  • Provide training and onboarding experiences to trainees and new staff around triage procedures.
  • Effectively communicate with UMCC support staff and Office Manager around their participation in emergency assistance, and prioritization of walk-in issues.
  • Communicating with all clinical teams’ members around students they may see who have been seen through the triage system.
  • Provide training experience to UMCC trainees around the provision of triage services.
  • Document all incoming or emergent clinical issues that arise during their shift, including telephone contacts that exceed routine information requests.
  • Welfare checks, including calls to and from the student, police, or when appropriate, family or friends.
  • Make community contacts when this is indicated at the time of the Walk-In appointment and with appropriate releases. Community contacts may include resident advisors, as well as other community resources.
  • Maintain responsibility for each client seen on Triage until an appropriate disposition is found.
  • Must be available for crisis intervention and emergency situations that may arise during regular working hours and carry a cell phone on a rotational basis to promptly respond to requests by University staff members for assistance when the Counseling Center is not regularly open.
  • Conduct risk assessments
  • Manage caseload of crisis students who need to be seen for brief periods in order to be stabilized.
  • Initiate Voluntary and Involuntary Hospitalization Procedures
  • Collaborate with UM Counseling Center staff, community providers and other campus constituencies in the planning, implementation, and coordination of care of UMCC clients.
  • Provide daytime and on-call crisis services as indicated by Director and Associate Director.
  • Consult with faculty, staff, students, family members and student guardians.
  • Given the nature of triage/crisis work, there may be times where any clinical staff member may need to stay past closing time to complete paperwork , complete assessments of students who were seen through the triage system and/or consult with staff members conducting risk assessments.
  • Clinical staff may be required to provide crisis/triage coverage during the Noon hour.
  • Share coverage with all UMCC clinical staff around designated operating hours as instructed by the Director and/or Associate Director for Clinical Services (e.g., Noon, 4pm, etc.)
  • Requires some evening and weekend work.
  • All Counseling Center Clinical Staff are required to participate in educational, outreach and prevention programs originating from the Center. This may take the form of developing such programs oneself or accepting assignments to supervise or participate in such programs. Staff are required to regularly consult with and keep the Assistant Director for Outreach, Director, or Associate Director informed about their participation in such activities. The person holding this position is expected to lead a minimum of two such programs each semester. These programs include activities originating from and under the supervision of the Counseling Center’s Assistant Director for Outreach or staff who intend to bring the Center’s services and the skills of the professional staff to members of the student body and the University community.

Clinical and Other Responsibilities:

  • Given the nature of the role, clinical documentation for students seen in the morning must be completed by close of day. Documentation for students seen in the afternoon must be completed by Noon of next business day. All documentation must be completed prior to starting any approved leave.
  • Complete records punctually according to record keeping/report writing procedures that are currently operative at the Counseling Center and required by legal and ethical regulations.
  • Submit all service reports, or other communications involving the clinical operations of the Counseling Center which are intended for persons, departments, or agencies outside of the Counseling Center for review and approval of the Director or Associate Clinical Director of the Counseling Center before transmitting them.
  • Participate annually in at least two Division of Student Affairs activities (e.g., graduation ceremony, staff development breakfast, Laurel awards, etc.)
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Responsibilities may include some direct clinical service (i.e., intakes, individual and/or group counseling), and supervision.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to tolerate the daily unpredictability of providing triage services and being reasonably flexible with their times, while at the same time maintaining appropriate boundaries.
  • Excellent written/oral/interpersonal communications skills, flexibility and ability to collaborate well with others.
  • Demonstrated expertise in clinical case management, crisis intervention and management, and student development theories in the context of higher education.
  • Demonstrated expertise in working with severe psychopathology.
  • Demonstrated skill in working well under pressure while prioritizing and managing multiple clinical situations and coordinating efforts as a part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Commitment and expertise in working with diverse populations and/or underrepresented college student populations.
  • Proficient in a variety of computer software applications (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Thorough knowledge and experience with providing time-limited counseling and psychotherapy, evaluation, diagnosis, and crisis intervention.
  • Evidence of organizational understanding and an ability to work collaboratively.
  • Experience in directing, organizing, and prioritizing workload to meet required deadlines and department objectives.
  • Skill in preparing comprehensive and in-depth analysis of complex, sensitive, and multi-faceted issues, particularly under tight time constraints.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Experience in clinical crisis management systems.
  • Internship experience in a university counseling center or other supervised experience in college student mental health is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide psychological services (clinical assessment, crisis intervention, psychological assessment, and short-term individual and group psychotherapy/counseling).
  • Demonstrated ability to provide outreach and consultation to a multi-culturally diverse university community.
  • Demonstrated commitment and/or expertise in working with a diverse student body, cultural competence, and attunement to the influence of cultural backgrounds, identity configurations, and other differences on mental health attitudes, stigma, and help-seeking behaviors.
  • Knowledge of current and emerging college-age mental health issues, and experience in working in a college or university mental health setting. Ability to interact with college-age populations, graduate and professional students, international students, parents, faculty, and college administrators.
  • Demonstrated talent for collaboration; able to establish and maintain trusting, working relationships that reflect kindness, mutual respect, and honesty, with a highly diverse population of student, staff, and internal and external partners.
  • Ability to foster a culture of collaboration and trust while ensuring that confidentiality and other legal and ethical mandates are maintained to the highest standards.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and computer skills.

Desired Qualifications:
  • The successful candidate will be a generalist with a demonstrated commitment to working with a diverse student population. Applicants with demonstrated commitment to working with particular student groups or presenting problems would have opportunities for development.

Education Requirements:

  • Master’s or advanced degree in counseling/psychology/social work.
  • Must be licensed or license eligible as a mental health professional in the State of Florida.
