Assistant/Associate/Full Professor Tenure System

Position Summary

Michigan State University actively promotes a dynamic research and learning environment in which qualified individuals of differing perspectives and cultural backgrounds pursue academic goals with mutual respect and shared inquiry.

The School of Social Work seeks an outstanding scholar to join the faculty as a tenure-system Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor. The scholar will contribute to the leadership and growth of the Michigan State University (MSU) Consortium for Sexual and Gender Minority Health, an initiative within the College of Social Science that is housed in the School of Social Work. The consortium includes a large group of social scientists across the College who study sexual and gender minority (SGM) physical or mental health from a social ecological perspective. The consortium serves as a coordinating resource for social science research in SGM health at MSU and will establish the College of Social Science at MSU as a national leader in SGM health research. If hired at the level of Associate or Full Professor, the scholar in this position will provide leadership for the consortium through facilitating interdisciplinary research teams, mentoring faculty and graduate students, engaging community stakeholders, and leading SGM health training initiatives.

We seek scholars whose program of research focuses on physical or mental health among SGM people and communities and those with strong histories in mentoring and leadership. Advanced methodological expertise in measurement related to SGM health is of particular interest, as is policy development, advocacy, and evaluation. Scholars who employ innovative research methods (e.g., mixed methods, longitudinal methods, community-based participatory research, measure development) and/or focus on intervention development to address the unique stressors, needs, and resilience of SGM communities across the lifespan are particularly desirable.

The scholar in this position will join a group of nationally known scholars to promote change in policy, programming, and practice for SGM communities. The scholar’s responsibilities will include: sustaining an active and successful program of research as evidenced by high impact peer-reviewed publications, presentations, and external funding; teaching, mentoring, and advising graduate students; and participating in department, college, and university governance activities. If hired at the level of Associate or Full Professor, the scholar will additionally provide leadership to the consortium with their strategic vision and provide mentorship to affiliated junior faculty. The scholar will be committed to working with interdisciplinary research teams and dedicated to mentoring diverse students preparing for careers in research and/or policy.
