Position Summary

The Student Engagement Coordinator, OSS will be the lead for developing student programming within the TRIO SSS program. The TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) program is funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education as part of the Federal TRIO Programs, which are a set of opportunity programs that motivate and support first-generation, low-income students in successfully pursuing post-secondary degrees. TRIO programs provide academic tutoring, mentoring, financial guidance, and other supports necessary for educational access and success. Student Support Services (SSS) is one of the numerous programs that currently make up TRIO.

Student Support Services (SSS), is the largest and most expansive program promoting college success for first-generation, low-income students, and students with disabilities as it provides academic tutoring, personal coaching, and other supports necessary for such students to persist and ultimately graduate from college. SSS was created precisely because Congress recognized that financial aid alone is insufficient to ensure college completion.

Primary Duties:

The Student Engagement Coordinator, Office of Supportive Services, will be the lead for developing student programming within the TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) program. This includes the three-week residential summer bridge program, workshops, community building activities, orientations, study abroad, and other student facing programs. This programming will assist TRIO students in their academic proficiency, socio-emotional engagement, and institutional navigation while supporting grant objectives for retention and graduation. The coordinator is responsible for building a strong culture of program participation and meets with students for coaching appointments as needed. Additionally, the coordinator develops assessment and evaluation strategies for program activities. The coordinator supports grant operations by serving as the lead verifier of participant eligibility and documenting participation in programming.

Teaching (10%)

  • Teach/Co-teach TRIO SSS first-year seminar (UGS110-1 credit) as requested
  • Develop curriculum for three-week summer bridge program in concert with other staff and summer math/writing instructors.

Advising (50%)

  • Provides individual coaching to program students.
  • Lead planning, coordination, and delivery of three-week residential summer bridge program for incoming first-year students.
  • Planning, management, and implementation of academic and socio-emotional programming including program orientations, workshops, etc.
  • Coordinate activities that promote program connection and participant retention. Activities include financial aid and financial literacy, career exploration, graduate school preparation, academic support workshops, social activities, and academic recognition.

Research (15%)

  • Develop learning outcomes and assessment strategies for each programming effort that aligns with program and unit goals.
  • Monitor, analyze, and report learning outcomes assessment results from programming efforts.
  • Utilize technology platforms to organize, manage, and maintain program data on participants in order to assist in the measurement of learning outcomes and program goals.

Outreach (5%)

  • Present at prospective student events and assist with outreach for prospective TRIO SSS students as needed.

Other (20%)

  • Lead the verification process for incoming participants to ensure eligibility per grant requirements.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with faculty, staff, students, administrators, other University programs, and other stakeholders to ensure student success.
  • Serve on relevant Pathway Program, NSSC, and campus committees.

Required Degree

Masters -Higher ed., student affairs, related

Minimum Requirements
  • Master’s degree or equivalent experience in higher education, student affairs, or another related field
  • Experience with intensive cohort-based student support programs and academic advising in higher education
  • Demonstrated competency in workplace technologies and evidence of promoting effective teamwork among faculty and staff
  • Experience with student support technology systems
  • Proven commitment to undergraduate student success
  • Excellent communication skills; including an ability to work diplomatically and effectively with campus partners
  • Demonstrated ability to work with students and colleagues from diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to access, understand, and interpret data from multiple sources to facilitate and promote student success through pro-active and innovative student services
  • Ability to use data to evaluate individual and group efforts to promote student success
  • Computer literacy including Microsoft Office Products
Desired Qualifications

Experience with federal grant programs with an emphasis on TRIO programs including knowledge of legislation and regulations related to TRIO programs. Personal experience similar to the student population served by the TRIO SSS program or professional experience serving similar populations.

The ideal candidate will have experience:

  • Within a college or university setting;
  • Knowledge of undergraduate student success concepts, theories and/or practice; and experience teaching, advising, leading, and/or mentoring diverse undergraduate students;
  • Strong skills in documentation, tracking, and data compliance;
  • Event planning and student programming skills with experience utilizing learning outcomes assessment to analyze and improve.
  • Strong data management and organizational skills;
  • This position requires occasional nights and weekends;
