Assistant Professor - Plant Ecology of Changing Ecosystems - Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management

The Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management (ESPM) at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor faculty position in the area of Plant Ecology of Changing Ecosystems with an expected start date of July 1, 2021.

Understanding how plants respond in changing ecosystems is fundamental to the health and well-being of both human and natural communities. Insights into the structure and function of vegetation in natural and managed ecosystems informs our efforts to develop sustainable and equitable ways to adapt to environmental novelty. Across the globe, terrestrial ecosystems are undergoing rapid change. Climate is a major driver that interacts with a host of other stressors including altered disturbance regimes and rapid biological migrations. Improving our knowledge of these forces and their consequences is priority for California and the world.

Diversity, equity, and inclusion are core values at UC Berkeley and ESPM. Our excellence can only be fully realized by faculty, students, and staff who share our commitment to these values. Successful candidates for our faculty positions will demonstrate evidence of a commitment to advancing equity and inclusion through their research, teaching, and/or service.

ESPM is committed to addressing the family needs of faculty, including dual career couples and single parents. We are also interested in candidates who have had non-traditional career paths or who have taken time off for family reasons, or who have achieved excellence in careers outside academia.

Basic qualifications:
  • Applicants for this position must hold a Ph.D. (or equivalent international degree) or be enrolled in a Ph.D. (or equivalent international degree) granting program at the time of application.

Preferred qualifications:
The ideal candidate will;
  • Demonstrate evidence of strong research productivity, potential for funding, and a commitment to excellence in teaching and research mentoring of undergraduates, graduate students, and post-docs.
  • Demonstrate evidence of outstanding scholarship within a relevant field such as, but not limited to, plant ecology, ecosystem ecology, environmental biology, environmental sciences, range science, forestry, restoration ecology, or other natural resource fields.
  • Exhibit broad expertise in vegetation dynamics.
  • Possess strong analytical skills where they can conduct innovative, basic and/or applied field-based studies, can communicate their work effectively to a broader public, and work with other researchers from diverse disciplines.
  • Demonstrate evidence of their commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in ways that align with UC Berkeley's mission to meet the educational needs of California's diverse population (see: https://ofew.berkeley.edu/recruitment/contributions-diversity/support-faculty-candidates).

ESPM is a multidisciplinary community of scholars and cooperative extension specialists from the biological, physical, and social sciences and the humanities who conduct research, teaching, and outreach to advance scientific understanding and develop solutions for the world's pressing environmental problems. To achieve this goal, ESPM recognizes that equity, inclusion, and diversity must be integrated with strategies to address the critical environmental challenges facing humanity, including climate change, food security, natural resource access and management, biodiversity, environmental health, land use decision-making. All of these efforts contribute to maintaining sustainable living conditions. We are home to a top-ranked PhD program in environmental science, environmental studies and ecological/evolutionary biology. ESPM supports two professionally oriented masters programs in forestry and range management (Range Management). Our undergraduate students have a choice of vibrant majors that span the disciplines in the department. The College of Natural Resources includes Berkeley Forests, a research and extension center that manages five research forests and supports the Center for Fire Research and Outreach (Berkeley Forests).
