The National Institutes of Health has implemented a new initiative aimed at speeding innovation, development and commercialization of COVID-19 testing technologies, a pivotal component needed to return to normal during this unprecedented global pandemic. The Medical Diagnostics Research Associate/Lab Manager will conduct and support experiments required for the validation of some clinical tests by generating bench performance data and preliminary usability data for new technologies that have not been validated for the purpose of testing COVID-19.

Job Duties:

  1. Handle samples involving hazardous biomaterials that require BSL-2 containment including receiving, unpacking, processing, storage and safe disposal.
  2. Perform functions of research projects involving hazardous biomaterials that require BSL-2 containment including sample preparation, molecular diagnostics (such as PCR, RT-PCR) and immune-assays following technical instructions and standard operating procedures in a BSL-2 work environment.
  3. Develop experimental protocols and standard operating procedures for safely handling hazardous biomaterials that require BSL-2 containment.
  4. Maintain records of all tests performed and data collected, compile and tabulate data, and provide analysis of results.
  5. Contribute to the scientific analysis of projects.
  6. Write and review methods sections of manuscripts.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree or higher in the biology/chemistry laboratory sciences (or other scientific discipline that has a wet laboratory component) required
  • Experience working in a BSL-2 laboratory environment is a plus
  • 2-5 years of research experience

Skills:

  • Self-starter, reliable, motivated in one’s work, with a demonstrated ability to work in a team environment
  • Understanding of engineering processes related to lab equipment set up, maintenance, and repair
  • Well-developed conceptual, analytical and communications skills
  • Ability to create, read, and interpret engineering schematics
  • The ability to work effectively with diverse populations including students, staff, and faculty

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience working with biomaterials in a BSL-2 environment is preferred
