Job Description:

The Biological Scientist will function in an Acute Care Surgery (ACS) laboratory as a team leader that conducts experiments, analyzes the data and presents the information locally and nationally. This position will be sponsored by a recent extramurally funded research project led by a faculty member of the Department of Surgery ACS Division. This position will work in conjunction with other lab personnel to maintain a 40 hour week work, including weekends and holidays as needed.

Responsibilities to include:

  • Independently performing both animal and benchtop experiments with limited technical instructions from the Principal Investigator (PI).

  • When there is a need for techniques and/or assays that are available in the field but have not been established in the laboratory, this biological scientist is responsible for learning and adopting the techniques/assays to meet the project needs.

  • This individual will work together with postdoctoral associates and laboratory staff in the group to prepare experimental plan/design for group discussion.

  • Although not required to draft abstracts and manuscripts, it is their responsibility to collect, organize and analyze the experimental data and present the results for discussion in the weekly lab meeting.

  • In addition, the Biological Scientist will primarily lead the overall lab operations to maintain the functioning of the laboratory.

  • Any other duties, as needed, to fulfill the mission and to abide by the values of the College of Medicine.

Advertised Salary:

$40,000 - $46,000 annually, commensurate with education and experience.

Minimum Requirements:

Doctoral degree in biology or a closely related field; or a master's degree in biology or a closely related field and one year of relevant experience; or a bachelor's degree in biology or a closely related field and three years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree in biomedical sciences
  • Terminal degree (Ph.D.)
  • Expertise in Immunology
  • Hands-on experience in qRT-PCR, cell culture, and western blotting assays
  • Experience in flow cytometry and/or animal handling is a plus
